HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-02-26, Page 27It’s so hard to keep up with the
weather! Our burst of almost spring-
like weather has past as we are
plunged back into our snowy, stormy
weather.
As quickly as the snowmobile trail
was underwater, it was only a few
days and the groomer was out and
about getting the trails back into
shape. The snowmobile folks will
be happy that they are back in
business.
There were two snowy days this
past week off school. Considering
the amount of snow and nasty days
we all have felt we have endured,
there has only been two days for me
to not drive the bus.
It made for a nice long weekend,
except for the snowy part. Monday
morning there was a two-hour bus
delay due to a problem near the
Seaforth schools and the sun was
shining brightly for the drive.
Just as the snow seems to come
and go, so do people in and out of
the hospital. Neil Dolmage, Alf
Nichol and Max Oldfield are out.
Lou Raynard is in Stratford hospital
suffering with a broken hip as is
Rene Hulzebos. Cathy McClure is a
patient in Clinton hospital.
Enjoying a girls’ night away were
Marie McGavin and Donna Knight.
They went to Marilyn McDonald’s
home in Grand Bend to have dinner
and spend the evening together. The
two ladies spent the night, then
returned to Brussels the next day.
They had a fun time catching up
with each other and their families.
They report there was no pillow fight
between friends.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Phyllis Beacom.
Phyllis and her husband Bill were
residents of Brussels for many years.
Bill was CIBC bank manager for
some time. They had one daughter
Hope. Her husband is Ron and their
children are Meagan and John.
Phyllis moved to Whitby about
five years ago but remained close
friends with old neighbour Edna
Pearson. They exchanged phone
calls every week to keep in touch.
The service was held for Phyllis on
Saturday. Our condolences to all
family and friends.
Traveling to Letonia, Ohio for the
weekend are members of Anne
Elliott’s family.
They were attending the wedding
of Anne’s granddaughter Rosie,
daughter of Fern and Ward. The
wedding was held on Friday, so they
left Thursday to make the journey to
Ohio. Other members of Anne’s
family invited included Rob and
Kathy Burkholder, Chris and
Michelle Burkholder, Velma and
Dave and family and Donna and
Les.
The Cranbrook darters saw an
inspired and enthusiastic team of
Karen Bowles and Murray Houston
accomplish the high shots of the
night shooting 90 and 140
respectively. Honourable mention
goes to Dave Bowles shooting 138
which he said was “a long time
coming”.
There have been plenty of
mailboxes smashed around the area.
Boxes in Morris and McKillop
suffered the fate last week along
with ones on Moncrieff Road and
the Hullett McKillop Road.
Returning from a trip to
Brownsville, Texas is Lloyd
Glanville. Lloyd went with Les
Glanville and a friend fromManitoulin Island for the nine-daydrive. They explored Brownsvilleand went to an alligator farm Theytried to enter Mexico, but picked thewrong day as there was a major drugbust going on and they were escortedback across the border again. The quilters of the Brussels areahave been busy again. Jean Bewleyhas opened her home again for the
Women’s Institute quilt to be quilted.
Last week they had as many as eight
ladies dropping in to work on the
quilt and by the time you read this
article, the quilt should be done. The
ladies have a great time together and
non quilters manage to bring in
lunch for the workers to enjoy.
McGavin, Townsend and others
sponsored an annual curling
bonspiel on the weekend in Seaforth.
There were plenty of locals looking
to curl their best and win the top
prize. Rick McDonald, Paul
Johnston, Scott McDonald, Brett
Lee, Murray Johnston had a good
day, enjoyed great meals, had lots of
fun and won a prize as well.
Thanks to the area businesses
that support the many activities,
events and programs in our
communities.
Celebrating birthdays last week
were Helen Brenie, Steve Blake,
Christopher Becker, Joel Dalton,
Tyler Williamson, Steve Knight,
Kevin McNaughton, Rachel
Sutcliffe, Bruce McDonald, Tamara
Williamson, Chris Lee, Adam
Hamilton an Terry Nichol.
Huron East council and the
Gateway Rural Health Research
Institute are now on the same page
after the rental agreement between
the two was approved to be signed at
council’s Feb. 17 meeting.
The agreement was initially
rejected by council at its Feb. 3
meeting. Clarifications were
necessary pertaining to a clause in
the agreement granting Gateway
first right to refusal on several units
in the Huron East Health Centre.
Another agreement, which offers a
clearer description of the first right
to refusal clause, was presented Feb.
17 in an in-camera session. The
proposed agreement was presented
to councillors in closed session, and
voted on immediately upon
returning to the public meeting.
The agreement will stand for the
next five years before it is up for
renewal.
All councillors, with the exception
of Larry McGrath, voted in favour of
the new agreement.
After McGrath voted against the
motion, mayor Joe Seili asked him,
“Well Larry, who would you have us
rent these spaces to?”
McGrath said he felt the
municipality’s asking price was too
low, adding, “I believe I have the
right to vote as I wish.”
The charges that were agreed upon
between the two parties were $15
per square foot, per year, for the
1,760 square feet that Gateway
currently occupies.
Council was also presented with a
floor plan for the Huron East Health
Centre, which highlighted the area
in which Gateway will have the first
right to refusal.
When the motion was first voted
on, questions arose as to whether the
municipality should be granting first
right to refusal to a tenant like
Gateway, when the Family Health
Team currently rents the majority of
the building.
However, now that the map has
been highlighted, the offices
currently occupied by the Family
Health Team will not be included in
the area where Gateway now has
first right to refusal.

Getting down to it
Young hockey fans had the chance to try out the sledges used by the K-W Sidewinders
following their recent game in Brussels against the Simcoe Bears. The two teams were in town
for a minor hockey fundraiser. Wyatt Machan, foreground, and Brett Stevenson were among
those to give it a shot. (Vicky Bremner photo)
