The Citizen, 2009-02-19, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009. PAGE 3. The North Huron Police Services Board elected a new chair and vice- chair at their January meeting. The positions had previously been held by James Campbell and Archie MacGowan respectively. Under the direction of Campbell and MacGowan for the past two years, the board was successful in negotiating a three-year working agreement with the members of the Wingham Police Association. Filling the role of chair for 2009 will be MacGowan. Moving into MacGowan’s vacated vice-chair position will be Rob Enders. Looking forward, the board will be working on a new business plan for the North Huron Police Services Board in preparation for the audit of the board by the Ministry of Community, Safety and Correctional Services, Public Safety Division. The audit will be conducted in May. Video games are a part ofeveryone’s culture now. They are notjust for children anymore and theyhave been linked to forms of addiction and are often cited as a cause of violent behaviour. However, Sony and Microsoft preach on-line capability with their Playstations and XBoxes, and Nintendo has broken new ground with the Wii, facilitating a very active style of gaming never seen before. With both endless good and bad consequences stemming from video gaming, Kathy Douglas, Huron- Perth Presbytery’s youth minister, thought up an information night for both parents and children surrounding video games. The Joys And Woes Of Gaming will happen this Thursday (Feb. 19) at 7 p.m. at Clinton United Church. Douglas says the evening will hopefully inform parties on both sides of the controller so parents can feel confident with a better understanding of their child’s gaming and children can understand the risks and benefits involved with gaming. The night will begin with a demonstration with an actual XBox and a Wii present to familiarize both parents and children with some of the systems’ games and then there will be a presentation by arepresentative from GamersAnonymous and Huron Addictionsto discuss the dangers of excessivegaming.“I’m hoping this evening willbreed a better understanding in everyone. I’m hoping parents will have conversations with their kids and now they’ll have the knowledge to go to them and say ‘this is what I don’t like about the game.’” Douglas thought up the evening after she heard some concerns from area parents about their children and video games. However, she doesn’t want the evening to turn into an anti- gaming night. She thinks there are benefits and that all that’s required is more understanding. “If we were wholly negative with gaming, we would be closing doors, which isn’t very helpful,” she said. “I hope we can help bring more understanding to everyone.” For more information contact Douglas at 519-523-4380 or e-mailher atkathymdouglas@hotmail.com.Snow date for The Joys And WoesOf Gaming is Feb. 26. 9 Rattenbury St. E., Clinton, ON N0M 1L0 Ph.: 519-482-9924 ~ 1-888-235-9260 Res.: 519-524-9260 Check out RRSP and RRIF plans designed to meet your needs. Thank you seems insufficient for all the outpouring of donations for the auctions, donations at the door and the time the members of these communities gave for this benefit. The love and support from that evening has made this “bump in the road” for this family a little easier. Words cannot describe the feelings one gets from knowing that we live in such a caring, loving community who understands that we can make a difference. This young skater took to the ice in Blyth on Saturday night for the moonlight family skate that started at 8:30 p.m. while the adults enjoyed music and some beverages upstairs at the arena. The event raised just under $1,000 and 14 loaded carts of groceries for the local food share. (Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn LoughlinThe CitizenGaming takes centre stage New chair for board
