While organizations like food
banks, the United Way and the
Salvation Army were expecting a
decline in donations due to the
economic downturn, this hasn’t
necessarily been the case in Huron
County.
Deborah Morrison of the Salvation
Army in Wingham says there has
been tremendous community
support for the Salvation Army, both
with food and toy donations.
“The donations have been coming
in pretty consistently. We’ve done
very well up to this point,” she said.
“We’ve had a lot of community
support from places like Ethel,
Brussels, Lucknow and Teeswater.”
In addition to the community
donations exceeding expectations,
she said, support from the areas
schools has also been positive.
“The schools have been great and
the students have really leant a hand
with our food drives and our toy
drives,” she said.
In terms of the food drive,
Morrison estimates that donations
are slightly down this holiday season
from what they were a year ago. The
toy drive, however, has exceeded
expectations and has really surprised
those involved with the Salvation
Army in Wingham and throughout
Huron County.
One Christmas special, which
comes over and above the food and
toy drive is the Christmas Hamper
drive. While being in full swing with
that program, they were picked up
yesterday, that drive also yielded
unexpectedly good results as well.
The Christmas hampers aim to
provide the supplies for a Christmas
dinner, so potatoes, a turkey, etc. as
well as some extras for a family
around the holiday season.
While people may still want to
donate, Morrison reminds that the
food bank is open throughout the
year and that families are in need
throughout the entire year, not just as
Christmas.

Christmas time
It was Christmas time a little earlier in Brussels with the production of Slapshot Santa at
Brussels Public School on Dec. 8. Students presented the story of Santa Claus taking a run at
the NHL. Madison Koch, left, and Tamara Thyssen were among the younger performers. (Shawn

Flexing the pipes
It was no night to be sluggish and the Blyth Public School
students certainly weren’t, as the entire school gave its all
last week at their annual Christmas concert at Memorial
Hall. This year the show was called Slapshot Santa and Ally
Glousher, left and Amber Siertsema were singing away.
