HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-12-24, Page 30Patti Nixon greeted worshippers at
Knox United Church Dec. 22. Rev.
Tom Murray welcomed the
congregation.
The congregation sang, O Come,
O Come, Emmanuel.
Birthday Greetings were extended
to Connie Shiell and Mary Taylor,
who celebrated her 80th birthday on
Dec. 16 while Rev. Tom Murray and
his wife Brenda will celebrate their
wedding anniversary on Boxing
Day.
The call to worship was followed
by the singing of, As With Gladness
Men of Old.
Roger and Debbie Hopper and
family read the Advent readings and
lit the Advent candle. A Candle is
Burning was sang.
An Advent prayer in letter form
was read in unison from the bulletin.
The senior choir sang, There is a
Child, accompanied by Elizabeth
Procter. The children and youth
gathered in the front pew. Rev. Tom
Murray reflected on the presentation
of the Christmas story that the
children had taken part in the
previous Sunday. He said, what a
great job they had done commenting
on the gifts they had shared.
The Christmas story is the true
meaning of the Christmas season.
The innkeeper had no room for Mary
and Joseph in the inn in Bethlehem.
They had to stay in a stable where
the donkeys and horses stayed. Baby
Jesus was born in a manger. The
innkeeper gave them what he had.
People all have gifts they can share
and God wants people to use them,
said Rev. Murray.
The Song for the Journey was,
Still, Still, Still. The children and
young people adjourned for Sunday
school.
The scripture readings were Psalm
98 and Philippians 4: 4-7. After the
Prayers of God’s people, the Song of
Epiphany was, See Amid the
Winter’s Snow. The Gospel reading
was Luke 2: 8-20. The sermon was,
The Man Who Missed Christmas.
People miss the true meaning of
Christmas, said Rev. Murray. They
all need to hear an angel and open
themselves to the world. Each and
every day they need to be open to the
wonders of God.
Don and Connie Shiell collected
the offering which was dedicated
and the refrain of, O Come, Let Us
Adore Him was sung. While
Shepherds Watched was sung.
The worship service was brought
to a close by singing, Go Now In
Peace. Elizabeth Procter
accompanied all the hymns.
On Thursday, Dec. 24 the
Christmas Eve service will be held at
7 p.m.
On Sunday, Dec. 27 the theme is
