I want to wish all our readers a
very Merry Christmas and a safe and
happy new year from my family to
yours. The year seems to have flown
by and so far the weather person has
been co-operative.
Happy anniversary to Dan and
Annie McInnes on Dec. 27 and to
Karen and Rob Mason on Dec. 28.
If you see councillor Brock
Vodden out and about wish himhappy birthday on Dec. 29.Happy birthday to Deb Hakkers,Mike Haggitt of Blyth and JennaDeCorte of Kippen, who allcelebrate on Jan. 4.BLYTH UNITED CHURCHGreeting at Blyth United Churchon Christmas Sunday, Dec. 20 were
Barb and Doug Howson and Lori
Brooks. Ushering were Nicole Kerr,
Brenda and Lori Brooks and Doug
Howson. Floyd Herman was music
director. Fred Hakkers ran the power
point.
The poinsettias at the front of the
church were in memory of Gordon
and Betsy, Grant and Don Elliott,
John Lavis, Don, David and Annie
Craig, Charlie and Winnie Johnston,
Fran and John Campbell, Fred
and Mary Howson, Kristin
McGrath, Tyler Wilson and Elva
Brown.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church on this fourth
Sunday of Advent. He drew
everyone’s attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin with special attention to the
Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m.
Logan Chalmers and Connor Brooks
accompanied by Rev. Clark played
and sang the first verse of the hymn,
Joy to the World with the choir and
congregation joining in. Jessica
Sparling read the verse and lit the
fourth candle of Advent, the candle
of love.
Everyone sang the fourth verse of
the hymn, Hope is a Star.
After the call to worship the
children were asked to come to the
front for their storytime. Rev. Clark
lit a candle, then asked them if he lit
another candle from that one, what
would happen. When he did light the
second candle, the flame grew
bigger for a second, then stayed
lit.
People can keep lighting candles
from the others and they will not go
out.
Rev. Clark told the children that
the candles were like love, if people
keep giving it away the love will
never stop.
Everyone sang, I’m Gonna Shout,
Shout, accompanied by Rev. Clark
on the guitar and Doug Whitson on
the drums.
Lori Brooks read the scriptures
from Mark 112: 28-34.
The choir sang an anthem, Away
in a Manger.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was, Choose Your Attitude, Love.
The anticipation of a new baby
coming into a family is met with
dread and joy. Mary had dread when
Baby Jesus was born but the angel
told her it would be great joy. Theshepherds were another group thathad dread and the angel appearedand told them it would be great joy.A new baby coming alters life.Love is also like this as it opens up tojoy. The first commandment is love
your God with all your heart and
soul and mind. The Greek placed the
mind above all else.
The first love makes a person
happy and tingly but the mind says
to play it cool.
People know they would pay any
amount to be able to save a loved
one. If loved doesn’t change the life
of another than it isn’t love. The hymn, O Come All Ye Faithfulwas followed by the receiving of theoffering, the prayers for the worldand the singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn, Gentle Mary LaidHer Child was followed by thecommissioning, the benediction andthe three-fold amen.
Jon Hakkers invited everyone for
birthday cake and read the
December birthdays.
