Continued from page 16 our firefighters with our prayers. Protectors can get weary, and they would be blessed with our prayers. Chief Black enlightened us to the origin of the firefighters salute. He shared that this dates back to the Middle Ages and the time of the knights. Knights wore heavy armour and helmets with a shield that covered their face. The only way for one knight to recognize another, was to lift his face shield and show his eyes as a friend. This movement has continued to this day and to show respect and friendship towards another who serves in the duty of protecting others with a salute. As each firefighter was sworn in, he received a badge that was pinned to his uniform. This symbol of protection is from the days of yore. Knights provided protection to villagers throughout Europe at that time. The large shield the knight carried was one tool used to provide protection to the unarmed and vulnerable town folk. In keeping with that tradition, firefighters and police officers wear the badge over their heart, a symbol to us of their role in providing protection to the people of our community, our friends, our neighbours, our families and our home. Chief Black concluded with three pledges. The first pledge was to the citizens of North Huron. When we call in time of need, our firefighters will be there for us. The second pledge was to the firefighters. Chief Black says, “I will guide you the best way I can that we may safely and efficiently provide the best service we can for the people of our community.” The third pledge is to the families of the firefighters. Chief Black promised, “that I will expend all my efforts to ensure that at the end of the training session, or at the end of the emergency call, your loved ones will come back home to you, safe and sound.” In conclusion he thanked the council and people of North Huron for the opportunity to serve. He promised not to let us down. As a pastor and citizen of North Huron, I am privileged to be a part of this community. May God bless you and make his face to shine upon you. I like to conclude with the firefighter’s prayer: Oh Lord, please help our firefighters To be skillful and brave. Please let them never falter When there are lives to save. Be with each fellow firefighter And ride with them each run, From the moment they “suit-up” Until the job is done. Be with them as they guide a child Through the dark and smokey haze Give them strength and courage As they fight the deadly blaze. Lord, we put their safety in Your hands, But in the chaos and the strife, Help them act with selfless courage God, just let them save a life.
