In Howick, on home ice the Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets fell short of winning against the Bluewater Hawks with a score of 3-2 in Lower Lakes Female Hockey League action. A tough game on Sunday had the Lightning leading with two goals before the Hawks came back with three straight goals for the win. Lightning goals were scored by Dollee Meigs and Lindsey Ceaser with Emily Kelly playing between the pipes. The Saugeen Maitland Lightning are headed south Monday night, Dec. 14 to play the Waterloo Ravens at the Columbia Icefield arena at 8 p.m. For two Sundays in a row, the Midget boys broomball squad did some travelling to get to their games. On Dec. 6 they went to Palmerston to play. The Blyth boys came out strong in the first period with Tyler Hallahan taking a nice hard shot at the opponents’net. After the goalie stopped the shot Zach Drost was ready to tap the ball into the mesh for a goal. Less than a minute later Blyth’s defence let Palmerston walk through and earn a breakaway to tie up the game. Palmerston outplayed Blyth and went on to score three more goals taking a 4-1 lead at halftime. Blyth dug in their heels a little harder and only allowed Palmerston to score one goal in the second period. This game ended in a disappointing 5-1 loss. On Dec. 13, many players had prior commitments and family Christmases to celebrate and a much-smaller squad travelled to Mildmay. After six minutes of play Mildmay scored when the ball bounced off a Blyth player. There were several nice setups and chances for both teams to score but there were no more goals scored in the first half. Five minutes into the second period the ball was tapped into the net by a Mildmay player. Mildmay went on to score two more goals, the second goal on a power play. With only four subs Blyth players were getting tired, but still kept working hard to maintain ball control. Blyth finally scored a goal while shorthanded with a player in the penalty box. Defensive player Tyler Hallahan gained control of the ball and ran in on a breakaway to score. The final score was a 4-1 loss for the Midgets. I’ve got it! While one player tries to protect the ball from his opponent, his teammate is working to get control of the ball and move it to the goal. The Phantoms played the Blyth Outlaws in the tournament in Brussels on Saturday with the former taking a 2-0 victory. November came to a close with a one-day tourney in Durham. The team had lots of heart but couldn’t manage a win. Hopes were high for December, they travelled to Monkton, Dec. 5 and from the opening minutes to the final seconds, Blyth fans were not disappointed. The boys showed great teamwork and speed and their efforts paid off with a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. Monkton added one in the second. Blyth started the third with a slim lead and the determination to expand on it. They put three more by the Monkton goaltender before the final buzzer. This 6-2 win was well earned and just the thing the team needed. Two nights later Blyth hosted Ripley. The visiting team came out quickly and got on the board first. Blyth took the rest of the period to get settled in while keeping Ripley’s lead to one. Blyth picked up their game in the second with three goals by Spencer Stevenson, Mike VanWyk and Nathan Plunkett. Ripley added two to tie it as they started the third. Blyth got three more past Ripley scored by Robbie Gordon, Stevenson and VanWyk to end up with the 6-4 victory. Mitchell travelled to Blyth on Sunday, Dec. 13. Mike VanWyk scored close to the end of the first and Mitchell followed with a goal in the final three seconds of the period. Blyth’s game was picking up speed in the second. The checking and passing and shots on net paid off with two finding their way in. Plunkett and VanWyk scored. Even though Blyth seemed to run out of steam in the third, it looked as if they were going to hang on to the lead. Unfortunately tensions were mounting on both sides and penalties had to be served. Blyth goaltender, Kennan McDonald made a great save part way through the third, but with two minutes left Mitchell put one past him to tie it. Blyth tried hard to get that goal back but had to settle for the tie. Bantams win 2, tie 1 The Wednesday, Thursday and Friday action at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club was cancelled due to snowsqualls and high winds. In curling play on Monday, Dec. 7 the daytime curling winning skips were Pete Eskritt, Wendell Stamper, Stewart Leedham, Mac Inglis, Les Shaw and Hugh Clugston. The Monday night men saw team Doug Miller and Wayne Waechter come out on top. Tuesday ladies’ league had the Elston sisters Leanne and Emily as well as Amy Miller skip their teams to wins. Tuesday night competitive team winners were Earl Fitch, Bill DeVos, Rob Middleton and Calvin Ruttan. Saturday, Dec. 12 the club played host to the Evelyn and Bill Caslick family Christmas luncheon. The group, ranging of all ages, enjoyed the meal and each other’s company and have already made plans to return next year. To wrap up the week the Wingham Golf and Curling Club treated around 30 members to a Sunday brunch.
