The Citizen, 2009-12-17, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2009. Thanks to the willing organizational skills of Sherrie Oliver and her Christmas committee, the Brussels parade was a sight to behold. The winners of the colouring contest were: ages up to five, Avery Mueller, Emily Mann and Gabby Johnston; ages six to eight, Jordin MacPherson, Dustin Pennington- Fritz and Damon Mason; ages nine to 12, Kaelyn Morrison, Jasmine Vader and Colton Willford. The winners of the turkey draw were Darren Johnston and Jason Crawford. The winners of the floats in the parade were: best sports and rec club, Brussels Minor Hockey; best service club, Salvation Army; best commercial, McGavin’s; best overall float, Knight family; most original float, Don McNeil. The Brussels Business group is holding a Christmas gift basket draw again this year and the winners of the first two draws were Shauna Hamilton and Joan Deitner. Two more draws will be held on Dec. 11 and 18 so do your shopping in Brussels and put your name in at participating businesses. December is moving right along. All the fun of the holiday season is being spread about. Choirs and concerts, dinners and parties all add to the good times of December. God was laughing on Sunday at the United Church. During a rousing anthem, eyes moved from the choir to the Christmas tree. Slow motion set in as the beautifully-decorated tree headed south with the eyes of the congregation following the descending tree. Smiles all about were started, then broadened as the tree came to rest on the rail, leaving the tree-top angel doing a very proper curtsy. Soon after the tree performance, neck beads broke and were head plunking onto the slanted wood floor. Oh dear – more smiles. For the finishing touch at communion, a cup was heard to bounce and roll. Oh yes God and the people had a good morning. The Community Choral Concert held at St. Ambrose on Sunday night was well attended. This is a good night for hearing what the other church choirs are preparing. Taste in music varies so this is a good night to hear all types of music and the large audience was appreciative of the time and talent in our midst. Well done once again. Murray Lowe had a good birthday that went on for days. Cake at the shop, brunch with family with lots of well wishes from friends got him started into the brown envelope years. Congratulations Murray. Enjoy. Alma Watson received a special birthday serenade on Sunday. Son John and granddaughter Christine organized the cast of Joseph (performing in Petrolia) to sing a hearty song over the phone, since they couldn’t attend her party. A quieter version of the song was offered later at dinner with Mary and Ralph taking up the singing. The anticipation of Christmas is building with lots and lots of neat things happening all about. The cards arriving from friends we see too seldom, the greeting on the street and the wee jobs to get done before the company arrives. Join the fun of the season and spread the love about. Bye now, Betty G.W. Majestic Women’s Institute of Brussels met Dec. 9 for the Christmas lunch at the Walton Inn. Eleven members and guests sat down to a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings. A short meeting was held. It was decided to hold a soup and sandwich card party near the end of January. Shut-in boxes will be filled Dec. 14 and distributed that week. MajesticWI meets For the shut-ins Members of Majestic Women’s Institute gathered on Monday to prepare boxes of goodies for shut-ins. Each year the group makes up these packages to be given to people who are ill or housebound for other reasons each Christmas.
