Dr. Peter Kugba-NyandeDuff’s, Walton and Bluevale United Churches On Wednesday, Dec. 2 there were three activities on my calendar: Both Walton and Bluevale United congregations were having their UCW Christmas dinners. There was also the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) meeting for Grey and Brussels Public Schools. Out of the three I attended the UCW Christmas dinner at Walton. Prior to the dinner we introduced ourselves and our invited guests. After the food which was great there was a brief business meeting. Our fellowship included carol singing, reading scripture and illuminating words for our souls; making Christmas angel. The condition of souls and the condition of creation is troubled by self-centredness, self absorption, and failure to understand what is available in true communion with God, what God has offered us in the ancient covenant and offers us still in the coming of Jesus, the Christ. Since after Halloween everyone has had more than one item on his/her calendar, ranging from work, meetings, family gatherings, decoration, sharing of gifts and attending to personal matters. Our prophets, among them Jeremiah, Malachi, Zephaniah, Micah and Isaiah, join with the shepherds, angels, Wise Men, and our gospel writers to retell the never-ending story of the birth of a Saviour who was, who is, and who is to come again in Christ Jesus. Like the people of Judah, we arecaught up in cultures of foreignnations and no longer practise a worship or lifestyle that is pleasing to God. Much of the larger communities hardly have anytime for worship though they profess to be Christians. Advent practices focus on the themes of reflection and repentance, and John’s vocation is to call to the world’s attention the one coming, who will save his people from theirsins (Matthew 1:21). Luke’s gospel expresses deep and growing sense that Christian discipleship is a kind of living in between aware of Jesus, waiting for Jesus, and coming to know this Jesus, for whom we wait in the midst of an eventful, unpredictable, even tumultuous world, waiting to stand before him, yet not always knowingwhere he is. As we stand at the threshold of a new church year we find ourselves waiting for a Messiah and sing our song: “All Earth Is Waiting” (Voices United p. 5) Nos. 1&4 All earth is waiting to see the Promised One, and open furrows awaiting the seed of God. All the world, bound andstruggling, seeks true liberty; it criesout for justice and searches for the truth… In lowly stable the Promised One appeared. Yet, feel that presence throughout the earth today, for Christ lives in all Christians and is with us now; again, on arriving, Christ, brings us liberty. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2009. PAGE 19. At the Minister’s StudyThe time when all the Earth is waiting The Stratford Concert Choir is celebrating Handel’s 250th birthday with a special performance of Messiah. This event, featuring world-class soloists, the 85 voices of the choir, and musicians from the Stratford Symphony Orchestra will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. at Central United Church in Stratford. Stratford’s Ian Sadler, internationally recognized concert organist and the choir’s director, will conduct the evening’s performance. Soloists will be Anna Tamm Relyea, soprano; Heather Jewson, contralto; Christopher Mayell, tenor and Gary Relyea, bass. Handel’s wonderful, soaring trumpet and dramatic tympani, with the dancing string section create a celebration of the season that has thrilled audiences for over two centuries.
