HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-12-10, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2009.From March 12 - 21, 40 students,parents and staff from South Huron
District High School had the
opportunity to travel to Italy to view
famous historical sites such as the
Roman Colosseum and Pompeii and
to follow the route of the Canadian
Army during the Second World
War.
Another trip to Italy, much like the
one students enjoyed in March, is
being offered to anyone in Huron
County who may be interested in the
history of Ancient Rome or
following in the path of Canadian
soldiers during the Italian Campaign
from July 14 - 24, 2010.
This 10-day trip would have
travellers flying to Rome where,
after checking into a hotel, a walking
tour of some of the famous sites of
the Eternal City would be taken.
Travellers will walk through the
Roman Forum and tour the
Colosseum.
A second day in Rome will have
travellers touring Vatican City, the
Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s
Basilica. The afternoon will be spent
touring the Piazza Navona, the
Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain.
Days three - eight will have the
group following in the footsteps of
the Canadian Corps during the
Italian Campaign of the Second
World War. About 96,000 Canadians
fought in Italy in 1943 and 1944, and
almost 30,000 were wounded or
killed. The tour begins at the town of
Cassino and the Abbey of
Montecassino which overlooks the
now peaceful Liri Valley, once the
scene of fierce battles involving
Canadian troops. The Cassino War
Cemetery and Memorial (the largest
World War II cemetery in Italy) will
be the first of the cemeteries visited
on this trip.
The archaeological site of Pompeii
will also be toured. Pompeii was a
vibrant Roman town during the first
century CE that was completely
destroyed by the volcanic eruption of
Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. FromPompeii, the tour will move to the
Adriatic side of Italy to the small
town of Lanciano.
Day five will have the group
experience a full-day battle tour with
stops along the way including St.
Apollinare for a panoramic view of
the battlefield, the Moro River
Crossing, Sterlin Castle, Casa
Berardi, the Cider Crossroads, and,
lastly, Ortona where some of the
most dangerous and heavy fighting
of the entire war was seen in
December, 1943.
The Canadian War Memorial, the
Price of Peace Monument, and the
Moro River Canadian War Cemeterywill be visited before departing from
San Marino, the oldest and smallest
Republic in the world.
The last few days of the trip will be
spent in Venice seeing St. Mark’s
Square and the Doge’s Palace, a stop
in Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet
and lastly, Milan to see Leonardo da
Vinci’s The Last Supper before
returning home to Canada.

As the second week of Advent is
celebrated, students at St. Anne’s are
being reminded continually of the
less fortunate people in the world.
One Grade 12 religion group is
campaigning to stop violence
against women.
The awareness campaign is in
partnership with Amnesty
International, and students will
take part in a letter writing
movement.
These letters will encourage world
leaders and politicians to increase
penalties against aggressors and
support victims of abuse.
In addition to numerous
campaigns, the Me to We group held
an African Culture Night on
Thursday, Dec. 3. The event
included entertainment, a traditional
dinner, and a silent auction. Over
300 guests attended, and the group
raised an outstanding $11,000.
The support is appreciated and
students we hope it will continue as
they work to reach the goal of $25,
000.
St. Anne’s also has the pleasure of
starting a new team at the school
–the Nordic skiing team. Multiple
students have been practising for the
past couple of weeks. The team has
been rollerblading in the absence of
snow and will attend a meet next
week.
The most anticipated dance of the
year, the semi-formal is being held
on Friday, Dec. 11.
The Blyth PeeWee Reps went to
Milverton to face them on their
home ice and were unable to get any
by their goalie.
The squad played well, but
Milverton was able to make them
play the chasing game which did not
work for them.
Dalton Richmond played another
strong game between the bars.
