Just in time to help with your
Christmas baking, Shakespeare Pies
has opened in Brussels.
Now in their seventh year in
Shakespeare, owners Gerry and
Suzie Wagler were seeing so much
demand for their homemade
products, especially the meat pies,
that they decided to open a second
place.
Three of their employees, the
Hiller sisters, Melissa, 21, Heather,
19, and Rebecca 17, had been
driving every day from their
Brussels area home for the past three
years, so the village seemed a good
place in which to expand.
For the past several weeks they
have been renovating the building
just to the south of Oldfields on the
main street with the store portion
completed in time for opening last
week.
The bakery, said the girls’ father
Doug, will hopefully be completed
in January, with its large picture
window allowing passers-by a view
of the tasty delectables being
prepared each Thursday.
Helping the girls with the business
are their father and their mother,
Marilyn. For now the store will be
open Fridays from 10 a.m. until 6
p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until
4 p.m.
True to the name, pies play a
primary role here. Besides a variety
of dessert pies, regular size and
individual, “We have eight kinds of
meat pies,” said Melissa, “all made
just like you would at home.”
The meat pies, which come in
five-inch and nine-inch sizes are
chicken, turkey, beef, beef and pork,
steak and mushroom, steak and
kidney, tourtiere and Tex-Mex.
Diabetic pies are also available by
order.
Of course, there are tarts and
Christmas cookies, too. “We will
have a variety,” said Marilyn, “but if
you want a certain kind then it would
be best to order them.”
The store shelves are also filled
with homemade jams, jellies and
relishes, maple syrup and honey, and
Distinctly Teas.
The store will also carry Bright
cheese, Rebecca Martin’s summer
sausage and pepperettes, and pickled
eggs. “That was our first sale,” said
Marilyn.
The family said that they expect
the business will develop as the
community’s needs become
determined. “We hope to bring in
some unique items,” said Melissa.
“We will build as we go,” added
Doug.

Ah the sounds of Christmas. The
radio, the television and the stores
have all dug deep to find the tunes
that fit the season. As December
moves along, the music of the season
just gets better and better.
It truly is amazing to me that in our
country where less than one quarter
of the population attends church
regularly, the Christmas story
remains so popular. The Bethlehem
story passed through generations, is
still the base for this special time ofyear. The hope, peace, joy and love ofthe story, remains the message as ourworld changes. Details change, wordsreplaced, situations vary but eachcard we receive, each concertattended, each greeting passed holdsat least part of the good will as toldabout the angels, shepherds and kings
so long ago.
At the United Church on Sunday
we had Bob the Builder, from
Cousins Construction working on a
stable. A very contented cow from the
Le Drew herd set the scene for the
anticipation and wonder of the
season. The children were in fine
form as skipping sheep, mighty wise
men, angelic angels and serious
shepherds.
And as usual, the players were
marvelous, not necessarily as the
teachers anticipated but without a
doubt wonderful. The old story, a new
way.Of course all good times shouldinvolve food, so thanks Bob, Reneand Joyce for seeing that we wereonce again well fed.“Rejoice and Be Merry” was thetheme for the Blyth Festival Singersas they sang their stuff at KnoxPresbyterian Church in Goderich on
Sunday afternoon. Weekly practices
showed in the fine music they offered
an appreciative crowd.
Robert Blackwell and Sharon
Johnston keep them in line and in
tune. The Beard family from
Wingham were in their usual great
form, as they shared their talents with
harp, piano, cello and voice. The wide
range of music from both groups
made for a great afternoon.
Many familiar faces were present
enjoying the music and for at least
one in the crowd, the loaves at lunch
were an equal hit.
Concert plans are all in place formany children, parts have issued andpractice is getting serious. Thegrandparents have been alerted of thespecial dates to keep open. Oh theanticipation continues. The community choirs are ready toshare their music on Sunday eveningat St. Ambrose at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy
their talents.
For those who want to do the
singing, come to the United Church
on Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Sing your wee
heart out. We’ll hit all the favourites
in an hour.
This season is one of such joy that
you need to be sure that other
negative feelings don’t crowd in. Be
aware of sadness in our midst and
show you care, take time for others.
There are many places to share and
we each have our own way of doing
this. Just be sure you do.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Baking for you
Melissa Hiller, left, along with two of her sisters (Heather
and Rebecca) have been working at Shakespeare Pies for
three years. Now, owners Gerry and Suzie Wagler have
made it easier opening a second store in Brussels. Also
