I am a co-op student from F.E.
Madill Secondary School in
Wingham. My co-op placement is at
Almelo Holsteins, located on Newry
Road, near Henfryn.
I have been working here for a
couple of months now and I have
found it very interesting. The main
jobs I do on the farm are tractor
work, barn work, driving to town for
parts or supplies, and maintaining
the equipment.
So far my favourite job has been
running the MX 180 and harvester in
corn silage. It is something that I
don’t do at my home farm so it was
a new skill/job for me to learn.
My least favourite job by farm, has
been cleaning out the calf barn
because it is hard work and puts me
in a tight space which is never
comfortable for a guy who is 6'6"
tall. Luckily, that job is only done
about once or twice a year.
The main reason that I wanted a
co-op placement at Almelo is to get
a better idea of the business of
agriculture because it is something
that I would like to pursue as anoccupation for my future career.

I have a co-op placement at the
Wingham Upper Deck Youth Centre.
This is a non-profit organization
under the Youth For Christ Program.
It is located at the north end of
Wingham at 405 Josephine St.
During my time I have learned the
essential skills needed to work with
youth and also to complete
administrative tasks in this field of
work.
I have also had the chance to
volunteer at the drop-in program run
on Friday nights at the Centre where
youth can simply hang out and have
fun for as long or short as they wish.
It is a great way to meet new people
and creates a constructive activity
for youth to partake in.
I chose to have my co-op here
because I wish to further my
education in the area of social work.
The experience I gain here will
greatly help me to ensure this is the
right career for me.

I have chosen Finlayson’s
Restaurant to do my co-op
placement this year.
Finlayson’s is a casual dining
restaurant with a wide selection of
food from lasagna, chicken wings,
lamb, hamburgers, fries, grilled
chicken, seafood, pastas, a wide
selection of salads and also delicious
homemade soups. Not to mention
the many delicious desserts.
I have learned how to cut
vegetables, prepare foods safely,
how to present food, and care for
knives and equipment. The group of
people I work with at Finlayson’s
are encouraging, fun and have lots of
experience that they share with me
while we work. I have a few colleges
I am looking at for next fall, and they
are in Kitchener, London, or
Stratford.
When I am finished my classes I
plan to be a chef or have my own
catering business. I plan to have
fresh, homemade and healthy
choices.

F.E. Madill Secondary School in
Wingham has a great program that
lets students gain practical
experience in the workplace. I took
advantage of the opportunity to take
co-operative education this year. Co-
op is great for anyone because it lets
you go out into the work world and
see what you may want to do.
I am doing my co-op down at
North Huron Computers in
Wingham. A friend of mine took co-
op last year at the same place and
recommended that I go there.
I have only been there a few
months but I am learning lots
already. My supervisor, Paul is
teaching me all about computers. He
teaches me about the hardware and
software as well as cool little tricks.
Before co-op I wasn’t totally sure
what I wanted to do, but now I am
starting to see what this field of work
involves. Co-op is really fun and I
recommend that everyone should try
it.

I’m currently working on finishing
up my fifth year at F.E. Madill
Secondary School and in a co-op
placement at the Wingham Advance-
Times. I chose the newspaper
business because I enjoy writing and
taking photos and I figured it would
be a good experience for me to help
with choosing what I want to do
with my life.
As one of my jobs I get the great
opportunity to write movie reviews
once a week for page six of the
paper. Each week I run down to It’s
Movie Time in Wingham and
browse through all sorts of movies
debating which one to watch. It’s a
great experience for me and I’m
really enjoying it, even with reader
criticism of some of my reviews I
have recently received.
I have learned many things so far,
such as everyone is entitled to their
opinion, no matter what it is. I have
also picked up many good ideas for
creating great articles.
