HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-12-03, Page 24The Huron County Health Unitwants to ensure that parents ofyoung children know that HealthCanada has recalled some StorkCraft baby cribs. In Canada, over 950,000 of therecalled products were distributed.
These cribs were sold at Sears
Canada, Wal-Mart Canada andvarious other specialty retailers. This recall involves Stork Craftdrop-side cribs with plastichardware, including Stork Craftdrop-side cribs that were sold withthe Fisher-Price logo. This recall
does not involve any cribs with
metal rod drop-side hardware. The cribs were sold in variousstyles and finishes. The manufacturedate, model number, and crib nameare printed on the assemblyinstruction sheet that is attached tothe mattress support board.
On the Stork Craft drop-side cribs
the recall includes products with
manufacture and distribution dates
between January 1993 and October
2009.
The recall on Stork Craft drop-
side cribs with Fisher-Price logo also
includes products with manufacture
dates between October 1997 and
December 2004.
The Fisher Price logo can be found
on the teething rail, in the
manufacturer's instructions, and on
the assembly instruction sheet
attached to the mattress support
board.
The logo is also on the end panels
of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystalcrib models. The crib’s drop-side plastichardware can break or deform. Also, the drop-side can be installedupside-down, which can result inbroken or disengaged plastic parts.
All of these problems can cause the
drop-side to detach in one or more
corners.
When the drop-side detaches, it
creates space between the drop-side
and the crib mattress. The bodies of
infants and toddlers can become
trapped in the space which can lead
to suffocation. Complete detachment
of drop-sides can lead to falls from
the crib.
These products meet current
safety standards. However, the
reported incidents have
demonstrated that the plastic
hardware can break.
In Canada, there have been three
reports of entrapment and eightreports of falls from these cribs. There have also been 32 otherreported incidents related to brokenplastic drop-side hardware.Consumers should carefullyexamine the plastic drop-side
hardware for any signs of damage or
if the drop-side is installed up-side
down. If there is reason for concern,
consumers should immediately stop
using the recalled cribs and find an
alternative, safe sleeping
environment for their baby.
Consumers should not return the
crib. Any consumer with a crib
subject to this recall should contact
Stork Craft to receive a free repair
kit that converts the drop-side of the
crib to a fixed side.

Health unit alerts residents to crib recall
County councillors have been
asked by Huron OPP to get some
feedback from lower-tiers on
priorities.
Staff Sgt. Shawn Johnston
attended the Nov. 25 meeting of
council to discuss the annual OPP
business plan to assess policing
needs.
“As 2009 is winding down we are
preparing for the next year by
prioritizing our objectives,” said
Johnston. “We are reaching out to
municipalities to bring forth their
thoughts.”
Communities like Goderich that
have their own contract with the
OPP have had business plans, said
Johnston. “We are taking it a step
further so all municipalities are
inclusive in this.”
To that end, a questionnaire,
which was given to councilllors, has
been sent electronically to municipal
administrations, said Johnston. “All
we ask is that council identify
concerns and comment on what the
needs of the community are in
relation to policing.”
The top three priorities will be
included in the business plan for
OPP service in Huron.
There is also a section for
community events that Johnston said
would assist police in co-ordinating
their resources so they have the
appropriate amount of staff on
during the event.
Dec. 18 is the deadline for
municipal responses.
Warden Ken Oke thanked
Johnston, and Inspector Dan Grant,
who was also present, for the
opportunity. “I know with the police
service board there is the chance of
dialogue once a month and there are
communities that don’t have that. I
think this is a great way of doing
things.”
