Clement Clark Moore was the author of the classic poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas. It must have been quite a change from his work as a literary professor. The Gift of the Magi was written by O. Henry. In this Christmas ‘love’ story Jim pawned his watch to buy combs for Della’s beautiful hair. Della cut and sold her hair to buy a watch fob for Jim. And Dr. Seuss’ real name was Theodore Geisel. He wrote the Grinch in 1957. His first published children’s book was, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. Before he wrote children’s books, he penned the advertising slogan, Quick Henry, the Flit. Of interest is the fact that Theodore Geisel in his other ‘life’ created military training videos. Eddie Cantor Sunday, Nov. 29 was the first Sunday of Advent and at Londesborough United Church Robert and Kim Hunking and their three girls lit the first candle in the Advent wreath. The title of Terry Fletcher’s message to the congregation that morning was Birth Announcements. The Sunday school hopes everyone plans to attend their white gift service next Sunday, Dec. 6. A finger food potluck lunch will follow the service. The Londesborough Happy Gang Seniors held their Christmas party at the Community Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 25, exactly one month from Christmas Day. Sixty- nine folks were served a tasty meal by ladies of the Londesborough UCW. Jim and Elaine Scott entertained that afternoon with Christmas numbers and other familiar tunes, all very much enjoyed. There were six door prizes. A gift basket donated by Mary Peel was won by Geraldine Dale. Dorothy Carter will keep warm this winter under an afghan donated by Marie Krauter. Milt Dale turned a lamp that Delores Howatt won. A picture frame donated by Hugh Millar was won by Sandra Raidt. Helen Lee donated two doilies that were won by Dorothy Johnston and Gladys Van Egmond. There were also a number of other smaller draw prizes donated by members of the seniors group. The Happy Gang Seniors will meet again on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Much thanks Sun North / Envira North Systems of Seaforth donates trailer and fuel to transport shoebox gifts enroute to needy chidren via Operation Christmas Child. A big thank you to all the residents of the area who filled a shoebox gift . Once again our community has displayed generosity on behalf of needy children in spite of our local economic climate. On Saturday, Nov. 21, the 1,599 boxes which had been collected from the area (northern Huron County) were delivered to Waterloo. At the processing centre, they are inspected and prepared for shipment to a needy child Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaraugua, Haiti, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bisseau and Senegal.
