Blyth had two teams go up to
Stroud, near Barrie for the national
qualifiers during two days of great
broomball, Nov. 27 and 28.
The juvenile girls are coached by
Marg Kroes. They posted a victory
against Innisfil, a loss against
Seaway and a heartbreaking double
overtime loss against Palmerston.
The juvenile boys Renegades team
played four games. Their first was
against the host team, Innisfil
Impact.
Blyth’s Brad VanBakel scored the
first goal just a minute into the game.
Kevin Cronin earned the next goal
with the assists going to Brent Drost
and VanBakel.
Cronin earned the assist on the
next goal after passing the ball back
to his defensive player Connor
Miltenburg who ran in just past the
blue line for a nice hard shot into the
net. Drost took a nice shot on net,
but it was stopped by the goalie and
bounced behind the net. VanBakel
gained control of the ball, wrapped
the ball around the net and scored.
At halftime the score was 4-0 for
the Renegades.
Impact switched goalies at half-
time and only one goal was scored
during the second period. While
playing shorthanded with a man in
the penalty box, centre Dan Dery
sent the ball to Roman Sturzenegger
who showed some great stick
handling and scored a goal for his
team.
Keeper Graham Bedard, had a
quiet game in net but helped his
team earn a solid 5-0 victory.
The Renegades’ next game was
played late Friday afternoon against
an elite Eastern Ontario team, the
Sting. The Renegades really played a
strong first half. The Sting scored
only one goal on a powerplay.
The Sting stepped up their game
during the second period scoring
another power-play goal, then going
on to score two more before the final
whistle.
The final score was a 4-0 loss for
Blyth.
The Renegades were up early for a
game on Saturday, against the
Seaforth Hitmen. Near the top of the
first period Seaforth scored on a
breakaway.
In the second half Martin Ellis
scored with a nice low shot into the
mesh, to tie up the score. Several
penalties were given out but neither
team took advantage of their
powerplay.
With just over three minutes left in
the game Seaforth took the lead once
again. Sturzenegger came from
behind the net and wrapped the ball
around to tie it.
Both teams poured on the power
and with only seconds left in the
game Drost scored the game winner
with an assist from VanBakel.
The final score was 3-2.
The Renegades next opponents
were the Windsor Devils. The teams
were quite evenly matched. The play
went up and down the ice before the
Devils were able to score on a
powerplay with just five minutes left
in the first period.
In the second, Blyth’s goalie
thought a goal was scored, so he set
the ball down. Unfortunately the
Devils picked up the unattended ball
and scored.
The final score was a 2-0 victory
for the Windsor Devils.
This disappointing loss gave the
Renegades a fourth-place finish,
missing attending the Nationals next
spring by one game.
The Renegades, coached by Art
Bos and Robbie Archambault, were
sporting brand new jerseys with
appreciation to their sponsors
Blake’s Building, Blyth Legion,
Delta Power Equipment, Martin’s
Precision Baling and Pinty’s.
Blyth’s keeper was Graham
Bedard. The defensive players were
Brendan Boven, Kurtis Kolkman,
Matt Merner, Connor Miltenberg,
Drew Taylor and Brent Vanneste.
The forwards were Dan Dery, Kevin
Cronin, Brent Drost, Martin Ellis,
Michael Hogan, Jordan Rinn, Greg
Roetcisoender, Roman Sturzenegger
and Brad Van Bakel.

The Blyth Bantams hosted their
neighbours from Brussels on
Monday night, Nov. 23.
Both teams came to play a
challenging game. Brussels opened
the scoring in the first with a pair of
goals.
With 1.47 minutes to go in the
period, Blyth’s Mike VanWyk
brought the game to within one to
finish the first down by one.
Blyth’s VanWyk then added his
second to the scoresheet to tie the
game. Wes Thompson added
another in the second to take a 3-2
lead.
Brussels didn’t quit and tied the
game 20 seconds later.
Blyth reopened the lead at the
three-minute mark with a goal by
Rob Gordon.
Once again Brussels tied it at the
end of the period.
Everybody came out to play the
third and Blyth’s Spencer Stevenson
broke the tie. Blyth won 5-4.
