By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion’s general
meeting was held on Tuesday
evening, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. with 10
Comrades present.
Normal business matters were
discussed including snowblowing,
parade float, Christmas hours,
Christmas decorating and catering.
Special events include the
Christmas wings, fries and meat
draws on Dec. 19.
There are two family Christmas
parties to cater and calls are coming
in for next year’s fish fry bookings.
The December general meeting
was moved to Dec. 15 instead of the
week of Christmas.
Comrades are encouraged to
come into the Branch and pick up
some calendars to sell. Fundraising
for the Branch should not be left to
only a few. It takes effort on
everyone’s part to make it
successful.
Improvements for accessibility
for everyone requires funds, so stop
in and pick up some calendars and
help the cause. The calendars make
excellent Christmas gifts.
Our thanks to St. Ambrose Church
for allowing us to have a table at
their bazaar and to Comrades
Wanda Walker and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
The Branch hosted the Knight
family Christmas on Saturday. The
family of Leslie and Yvonne Knight
were in charge of the evening and
the over 50 in attendance had a good
time. The Knight family had a float
in the Santa Claus parade, then
came to the legion for snacks and a
social time before sitting down to a
turkey dinner.
Comrades helping out included
Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb Cann and
Sharon Robbins along with two
young people on dish duty for
community hours.
The Zone team darts was held in
Wingham on Saturday and the
Branch had two teams participating.
The men had a great day and both
Oh my, another snowless
November day and by the weather
guru it will be the end of the week
before the white wonder appears. It
feels quite strange getting excited
about the happy holidays without
snow.
The main street was a busy place
on Thursday evening as the business
association started off the shopping
season with lots of neat things to see,
hear and buy. It’s very good for the
environment to shop near home.
We had a very good parade on
Saturday as the community took
responsibility for the common good.
And Santa Claus is certainly a very
good reason for sharing the time and
place with community friends. The
lights and music put everyone in a
good mood all ready to mix and
mingle.
The firefighters were out all ready
to celebrate the season, sharing their
time and treats with us. To honour
one of the firefighters who has been
on the Brussels Department for 35
years, the crew walked the parade
route and let John Pennington be the
sole firefighter on board.
Nice touch guys. See, they do like
you John.
Many local service clubs and
businesses had lights glowing on
their vehicles, letting us know they
like to do business with us. Don
McNeil had his jalopy in fine tune
for the parade and also had an add-
on this year, on skis no less. All the
treasures accumulated over the years
were still in place. A sight to behold.
Santa and spouse completed the
parade looking very good on top of
the ’53 Chev firetruck.
A nice touch to finish a good
parade. Thanks.
After the parade at the community
centre Santa was ready for the
children to tell him the decision of
the day – the wish list for Christmas
morning. Tough work for anyone.
Hot dogs and skating and of course
the bag of candy make for a pretty
fine evening.
As much as we worry about the
future, it’s good to take a realistic
view of the world and when we do, it
may come clear that all is well. The
Christmas catalogue still holds a
prime spot in the life of a child and
the pages are just as ragged as they
were in years gone by. A good
indication to me that the world as it
changes will do just fine.
So enjoy the music, the concerts,
the visits, the shopping and the food,
it’s all part of the season. Embrace
the friendliness, the hope, the love,
the peace and the joy – it’s all there
for you.
Winners of St. Ambrose raffle
were: $100 grocery basket, Lauren
McNichol; $75 grocery basket, Ann
Hulzebos; $50 grocery basket, Steve
Ryan; 2 tickets to Blyth Festival,
Nick Terpstra; one bushel of apples,
Jack Ryan.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
