The Citizen, 2009-11-26, Page 19THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2009. PAGE 19. By Rev. Gary ClarkBlyth United ChurchRecently we at Blyth Unitedfinished up a series on the Seven Deadly sins. I think that the two biggest surprises that came from this series is how misunderstood the sins are today. They are incorrectly defined and because of that not properly dealt with. And second is the misconception that sins are bad because doing them ticks God off. I want to talk about just two of the seven as a way of clarifying why these actions/sins are deadly to us as human beings. The sins I have chosen are lust and envy. I think they are common enough for all of us to have had a first hand experience of them. When we think of envy we picture someone looking at something they don’t have and being filled with desire to possess it. That sure doesn’t sound so bad and if it is we are all probably in big trouble. Envy is everywhere. The last five of the 10 commandments are there to help us deal with envy and its results. You see it isn’t just the desiring of something you don’t have that is bad. The problem arises when our desire blocks out our appreciation for what we do have. Envying (coveting) another person’s spouse is wrong because you are really putting down your own spouse. Desiring what someone has means you think very little of what you do have. But when you possess that thing it too will soon lose its luster. Envy can never be satisfied because it is about desire not possession. It turns the bounty and blessings wehave into famine and curse. Theperson controlled by envy is veryunhappy with who they are, who they are with, and what is in their life. That’s bad enough but then envy pushes us to lie, steal, and maybe even murder to take what we think willmake us happy. It never does becausethe antidote to envy is not in gettingmore stuff, rather it is in the gratitude for what we have. What a difference it makes to look at your spouse, From the Minister’s StudyUnraveling the truths behind sin today The Parish of New Beginnings Pastor Perry Chuipka For more information contact The Parish of New Beginnings at 519-357-4883 Tuesday to Friday from 9-12. “Season Of Light” “Beginning The Journey of Light” Sunday, November 29th 7:00 pm Trinity Anglican Church Please join The Parish of New Beginnings in celebrating the beginning of Advent with a Special Advent Service.
