The Citizen, 2009-11-19, Page 21The Christmas Bureau is acountywide volunteer group thatorganizes five gift centres fordisadvantaged families. The gifts(toys, clothes, food, food vouchers)are donated, or purchased with cashdonations (for which the donor
receives a tax receipt). Hundreds of
volunteers and donors participate
each year and play Santa for up to
1,000 children and their families.
The Christmas Bureau itself is an
independent, community-wide
organization, but could not function
without the support of the Huron-
Perth Children’s Aid Society (office
space, phone lines, administrative
assistance), community churches,
and the caring members of the
community.
There are actually five ‘bureaus’
that provide for their local
communities each year. This year’s
gift centres are: Clinton (Clinton
United Church), Exeter (Christian
Reformed Church), Goderich (North
Street United Church), Seaforth (St.
James Roman Catholic Church, at
the Agriplex), and Wingham (Sacred
Heart Roman Catholic Church).
It is no secret that Huron County
has been hard hit by the economic
downturn. There may be former
donors who will be recipients this
year. This is a difficult role-change,
but it is hoped that anyone in this
situation will remember that to give
and to receive are both acts of
gratitude.
How does the Christmas Bureau
work? Anyone needing help with
call Christmas Central 519-524-
7356 x3271 or 1-800-265-5198 from
Monday to Friday (Nov. 30 - Dec.
11). Be sure to have ready the
children’s ages and sizes. Callers
will be given an appointment (for theweek of Dec. 14 - 18) at the closestChristmas Bureau, where they willprivately choose suitable gifts fortheir family at that time. How can you help the ChristmasBureau? Open your hearts, then
open your wallets. Donate new toys,
new clothing, non-perishable food
stuffs or money (cheques or cash tothe Goderich CAS offices, clearlymarked “Christmas Bureau”). Dokeep in mind the teenagers. Gifts can be delivered to yourlocal church gift centre or to the dropboxes between Dec. 7 and 11 so they
are ready for the families’Christmas
shopping the next week.

Job well done
Jim Rutledge of Goderich was thrilled to see that his book,
The Men Of Huron, had been recognized by Veterans
Affairs Canada, just before this year’s Remembrance Day.
Rutledge says he is about to order a second printing of the
book, due to its success. He is also currently working on a
similar book about the soldiers who fought for Canada from
Huron County for the First World War. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
