There was plenty of broomball
action in the area over the
weekend with the Blyth Junior
Broomball Association’s annual
tournament.
Games were played in Blyth and
Brussels with many local teams
earning gold.
The Blyth/Seaforth Juveniles
played Palmerston on Saturday night
and with a 4-1 victory earned the
gold medal for their division.
The Blyth PeeWee Green team
and the Blyth Midget boys also
captured gold.
There were 23 teams in the
tournament from as far away as
Innisfil.
Teams win gold
The local Midget broomball teamhosted the season game openeragainst Palmerston on Friday, Nov.6. Wyatt Bearss was the goaltenderfor the night and he did a great jobstanding up to the many shots he
received.
Midway through the first period
Palmerston scored a goal and the
score remained 1-0 at halftime.
In the second period, Bearss made
a great save, but the ball hit his foot
and bounced into the crease.
Some penalties were handed out,
but no one was able to take
advantage of the power plays and
score. Hunter Broda made a nice
hard shot at the net and Alex Sanders
was standing at the corner ready to
tip the ball into the net.
Unfortunately only seconds later
Palmerston ran in and scored to
widen their lead.
With only two minutes left in the
game Blyth was able to get the ball
into the net, but the goal was called
off as the net had moved out of
place. Blyth tried to score a goal in
the last minute of the game, even
pulling their goalie, but was unable
to get past Palmerston’s defence.
The final was a disappointing 3-0loss.The Midgets travelled to Seaforthon Wednesday, Nov. 11 for a muchdifferent game of broomball.Captain Greg Roetcisoender got the
ball away from Seaforth and sent it
into the mesh. Zach Drost passed the
ball towards Seaforth’s net and
Roetcisoender picked up the pass
and scored another goal, putting
Blyth ahead 2-0 at half time.
Assistant captain, Alex Sanders
gained control of the ball and made
a nice play passing the ball towards
the net. Derek deBoer picked up the
pass and scored a goal. Defender
Brodie Nairn shot the ball down the
ice and Roetcisoender was able to
get around Seaforth’s defence and
score his third goal, earning a game
hattrick.
Bearss earned the 4-0 shutout.
There was ice time left so the
teams practised some four-on-fourovertime. Blyth was able to scoreafter Broda went down on his kneesand deked Seaforth’s last man backto score. Blyth got a lucky breakwhen Seaforth’s shot into the Blyth
net didn’t count as the defensive
player went into the crease before
the ball.
Blyth kept the pressure on and
Roetcisoender guided the ball
towards the net and passed the ball
around the opposition. Drost picked
up the ball and shot it into the net.
With just over a minute left on the
clock. Seaforth was able to score
after Blyth failed to cover the net on
the rebound shot.
The overtime scrimmage was won
by Blyth by a score of 2-1.
Coaches Matt Nairn and Gord
Stute were pleased with the
improvements shown from the
Midgets season opener.Down in front
