Members of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture at their
annual meeting Oct. 22 in Seaforth
called on the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA) to work with
other farm organizations and
commodity groups to realize the
dream of one general farm
organization.
“The voice of agriculture
continues to grow fainter,” said Bev
Hill in supporting the resolution.
“We continue to allow ourselves to
be fragmented.”
Hill said Ontario agriculture
needs to dust off the Odyssey
Report, drafted early in the 2000s by
former OFA president Roger George
and representatives of commodity
groups and other farm organizations.
That report called for creation of an
an organization similar to Quebec’s
Union des producteurs agricoles
(UPA) which brings all farm
organizations under one umbrella to
deal with government.
“We dropped the ball on the
Odyssey Report,” he said.
“I don’t think we have the luxury
of time to drop the ball (again),” Hill
said. “We should have done it five or
With the pork, beef and veal
sectors all in serious problems, a
united voice is needed to get the
kind of action needed to help
farmers, Hill said.
He compared the situation in the
pork industry in Ontario and
Quebec. In Ontario, the sow
population has declined 20 per cent
yet farmers are still receiving less
than their cost of production.
Quebec sow numbers have declined
very little because their producers
are supported by their government.
The resolution found vocal
support from the meeting. Bill
Dowson noted: “Obviously there is
something wrong in the last 10
years. We have to recreate our own
house. We have to speak with one
voice.”
The resolution passed.
Hill will be at the OFA
convention to speak to the
resolution, Nov. 22-23 in Toronto,
because he was elected as one of the
delegates from Huron South region
along with Carol Leeming and Grant
Jones. Wayne Best and Marinus
Bakker will attend from Huron West
and Stephen Webster from Huron
East. Named as alternates were
Gordon Hill, Michael Becker and
Jeff Klomps. Since Huron can have
nine delegates, all the alternates will
have the opportunity to attend.
Wayne Hamilton was acclaimed
as the policy advisory councillor
from Huron South. Wayne Black
defeated Bruce Bergsma for the PAC
position in Huron West and Ken
Scott was elected over Steve
Webster for Huron East.
Wayne Black was returned as
president with Marinus Bakker,
vice-president and Carol Leeming,
second vice-president.
Guest speaker was Andrew
Campbell, interactive media editor
with Farms.com and former CKNX
Radio farm director. He gave tips on
how farmers can use the internet and
media such as smart phones to make
their operation more efficient.
