The Brussels Lions have contributed $3,200 to the pool for a new board and
lifeguard chair and $5,000 to the washroom and accessibility renovations at
the BMG Community Centre. Lions president Klaas Jorritsma, centre, made
the presentation to arena manager Murray McArter and recreation board chair
Kathy Sebastian. (Bonnie Gropp photo)
The deer hunters were out bright
and early on Monday morning and
while out on the bus route, we saw
hunters smiling broadly as being
successful in their hunt. I saw two
different groups and it looks like the
first day of the hunt will be deemed a
success.
The former Winthrop Bus Lines
final get-together with their former
employees was held. Brian and
Sharon Pryce and Doug and Gail
Schroeder retired from ownership of
Winthrop Bus Lines at the end of
April. Murphy Bus Lines acquired the
routes and some of the drivers now
work for Murphys.
The get-together included
travelling to Clinton and Central
Huron Secondary School. The group
of 11 included the owners, former
drivers and spouses and a few friends.
The group enjoyed the presentation
by the Alzheimer Society of Huron
County titled, Endless Summer Beach
Band.
It was an evening of music
featuring everyone’s favourite surfing
hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Songs were featured from popular
groups like the Beach Boys, The
Beatles, The Bee Gees and others.
Great songs like Surfin’ USA, Little
Deuce Coupe, Fun Fun Fun, had
people from the audience up dancing
and having a fun time.
The bus group returned from the
show to the home of Doug and Gail to
enjoy a social time and story time of
bus antics they have all experienced
during the years. The drivers
attending were John and Pat Gillis,
Jo-Ann and Rick McDonald, Karen
and Barry Hoegy, Dwayne and Karen
Pryce, Schroeders and friends Gord
and Irma Pryce and Ed Salverda. It
was a nice evening and I’m sure when
Brian starts missing our friendly
faces, he will want to have a get-
together again sometime.
Jeanne Kirkby and John Gaunt
have returned from a trip to the west
coast. They went by train to
Vancouver. From Vancouver, they
boarded the ferry and headed to
Vancouver Island, where they rented
a car and went to their destination of
Duncan, B.C.
The occasion for the trip was to
celebrate John’s sister, Barb’s, 75+1
birthday. The family organized a
family dinner for the over 30 or so
family members able to attend.
There was a second gathering the
next day for around 50.
John and Jeanne had the wonderful
experience of housesitting for a friend
of Barb and husband Tim’s for the
time they were there. The beautiful
home overlooked the peaceful
Quachicum Lake, one of three little
lakes around Duncan.
Jeanne and John spent a lot of the
time touring the area of Duncan, Port
Albany, Quotucan Bay and the area
known as the Cathedral of the Woods,
an area of gigantic trees.
They had the opportunity to visit
the farm that Barb and Tim had lived
on. Time had worked over the years to
make the farm energy efficient and
they enjoyed seeing it.
There were many different stores to
investigate, used book stores to
browse and markets to go to in the
area. They had wonderful weather to
enjoy while away.
The train trip was also a wonderful
experience. The food was absolutely
fabulous with gourmet meals in the
dining car. The observation car gave a
wonderful view of the endless flat
fields of the prairies, including a
potash mine in Saskatchewan. The
beautiful mountain scenery,
waterfalls and lovely sunsets were all
enjoyed by Jeanne and John.
They report they met some
wonderful new folks on the train and
thought it was a wonderful trip.
Fred and Karen Uhler were the host
family for the Innes clan reunion not
long ago. There were about 14
arriving to enjoy the day, a delicious
dinner, look over many old pictures
from years gone by, play a few lively
games of euchre and pick up some
pumpkins from Fred’s huge selection.
Anna (Innes) Cunningham, Karen’s
mother, was happy to see her
nephews and nieces, children of her
brother Bill and sister Mary’s
families, as well as many of her own
family and grandchildren.
Congratulations to Crystal
(Semple) McCallum as she has
graduated from a course at the
University of Western in London.
Crystal received her Masters in
Clinical Science, specializing in open
wound care. Attending the graduation
ceremonies were many of her family
including husband Chad and daughter
Kaleigh, Calvin and Gail Semple and
Betty McCallum. The group enjoyed
a celebration dinner together and
congratulations to Crystal.
Crystal has been a busy girl, as she
was asked to attend a conference in
Quebec for four days last week.
Crystal designed a poster as part of
her course and it was chosen to be
displayed at the conference. Crystal
was asked to come and speak about
the poster and its importance.
The Walton Hall was the place for
the first meeting of the year for the
BW Trailblazers Snowmobile Club
on Wednesday evening. There is
always plenty of work to be done
prior to the snowmobile season and
the dozen or so members on hand had
lots to discuss. There are some signs
already up, some culvert work to be
done, landowners to be approached
and the list goes on. Paul Dodds at
McGavin’s is the man to talk to if
you’re interested in knowing more
about the club.
The Walton Hall was decorated in
its Halloween finest for the
engagement party for Kelly
McDonald and Adam Jarosz on
Friday evening. Head decorators
LeeAnn Konarski and Alicia Dick
created a world of black and orange,
ghouls, spiders, pumpkins, lighted
trees and more.
The Halloween theme required
costumes for those attending and
there were many wonderful ideas for
costumes. The engaged couple came
dressed as a bride and groom from the
70s and there were hippies, a Roaring
20s girl, gogo dancer, lock and key,
minister, pirate, Fred and Wilma
Flintstone and more. The 22 party
guests did a great job in the costume
department.
The evening kicked off with a late
supper that included skeleton ribs, bat
wings, devilled eyeballs, spider eggs
in sauce and ghoul slaw with dried
flies.
When everyone’s supper settled,
Adam and Kelly spoke and presented
gifts to their surprised wedding party
attendants. The games then began and
great fun was had by everyone.
A Halloween party was held in the
shed of Chris and Judy Lee on
Saturday evening. Party organizers
were Chris, Judy and Patty Banks and
they invited a few friends in for the
evening for a night of games and fun.
Ghosts, ghouls and strange stuffed
guests hung from the rafters, sat in
chairs and welcomed all who
attended.
But it was not just a Halloween
party, it was surprise, a birthday party
for Judy Lee. Judy arrived home after
trick or treating with grandson Caden
in Seaforth, to find nearly 30 family
and friends hiding in the shed to
surprise her.
Chris reports that the last thing
Judy said to him before leaving for
Seaforth, was to promise not to tell
anyone it was her birthday on Sunday.
Chris can say honestly that he didn’t
tell anyone that night it was her
birthday, because he had done that
weeks before.
Judy celebrated a special birthday,
some where between 55 and 65,
probably about half way I’d say. Judy
was very surprised and the night was
filled with party games, ghoulish
stories, surprises, dancing and of
course food.
It was a fun night with many great
costumes including Braveheart, Bow
Lady, She Devil, Dracula, pirate,
hunter and a fairy princess and more.
Happy birthday Judy!
Celebrating birthdays to finish up
October were Brent Alexander,
Mackenzie McGavin, Janine Knight
and Davis Steffler. Kicking off
November are Marvin Bachert,
Stephen Burke, John Gaunt, Peggy
Humphries, Garret Mader, Bruce
Blake, Connie Cook, Darryl Hoegy,
Jim Ryan, Chris Stevenson and
Kathleen Williamson all celebrating
in the first week of the month.
