HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-11-05, Page 8In Lower Lakes Female Hockey League action this weekend, the Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets won both of their home games, making it six games in a row to start their regular season. Laken Smith, Monkton, had the only goal of the game, as the Lightning edged the Cambridge Roadrunners 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Howick. Emily Kelly, Port Elgin, recorded the shutout, playing outstanding in net. On Saturday, the Lightning won 2- 1 against the Chatham Outlaws with Lindsey Ceaser, Owen Sound, scoring the winning goal and Dollee Meigs, Owen Sound putting in the first Lightning tally. Solid goaltending from Sarah McGall, Owen Sound kept the Chatham offence in check. The Saugeen Maitland Lightning are next in action this coming weekend for two home games at the Howick arena Saturday at 5 p.m. against London Devilettes and Sunday at 3 p.m. against Windsor Wildcats. SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2009. The Brussels Atom Reps played against Elma Logan this past weekend. Brussels took an early lead when Noah Terpstra scored, assisted by Wyatt Machan. Near the end of the first, Machan scored his first of the game, assisted by Terpstra and Delayna Smith. Early in the second, Logan Kellington netted one from a faceoff in the Elma Logan end to keep a 3-0 lead. Minutes later, Kellington tipped one in with a pass from Connor Bridge. Just seconds later, Cody Harding added to the score. Smith netted her own minutes later to end the period with a 6-0 lead. In the third, Smith scored her second and Machan added his second and third to earn his first hattrick of the season. Kellington also earned his first hattrick of the season in the third. Despite the wind, rain and hailon the way to the arena, it was a great game in Port Elgin on Halloween for the Atoms. It was the near the end of the first period when Terpstra scored the first goal, assisted by Smith. Forty seconds later, Machan netted one, assisted by Kellington. In the second period, Bridge scored with the help of Machan and Avery McArter. The play was intense as the puck was moved from one end to the other, each team trying to score. Kellington netted his second, assisted by Machan; only to be joined by his third of the game, just 23 seconds later. This time he had the help of Bridge and Ben Newell. Another minute passed and Kellington scored again with the help of McArter. The score was 6-0 going into the third period. Bridge was assisted by Terpstra for his second goal of the game. Kellington netted two more goals in the third. Both were assisted by Machan and Mitchell McKee. Brussels ended the game 9-0. This was the second shutout of the season for the team. Sunday afternoon the Reps played in Zurich. Zurich took the lead early in the game. Kellington scored to tie it up. Machan scored from Smith to make it 2-1. Then, Bridge took the puck all the way down the side and put it in the net. It was 3-1. Zurich fought back and netted an easy one on goalie Derrick Waechter. Zurich then tied up the game with just 46 seconds left in the first period. It was late in the second when Machan scored on a clear rebound shot from Kellington. This put Brussels in the lead 4-3. Not to be left off the scoreboard. Terpstra scored from Kellington and Bridge to make it 5-3. There was a full 10 minutes of play before anyone was able to score, despite several attempts from both teams. Machan scored with an interesting backhanded shot. Brussels won 6-3. Waechter was solid in net. The list of Rep players are Waechter, Machan, Kellington, Smith, Bridge, McArter, Newell, Jack Pipe, and Dylan McNeil. Up from the local league this game were Terpstra, McKee, Hudson Smith, Harding and Nolan Johnston. The Reps are coached by Matt White, Vern Bridge, Kevin Kellington and Jeff Newell. They now boast a record of five wins and one tie. Brussels Atom Local League was home to Listowel in recent hockey action. Brussels came out strong and scored early in the first. The goal came from Noah Terpstra with Mitchell McKee assisting. Terpstra scored two more assisted by Hudson Smith and Darren Evans. Listowel scored a nice one on Konrad McArter. In the second period Cody Harding scored with Ronan Jarrad assisting. Terpstra put in another goal with Brett Stevenson assisting. Listowel put in two more but Kailey Wheeler scored twice with assists from Nolan Johnston and Chris Hruska to keep Brussels on top by a score of 7-3. The team travelled to Goderich to play a tough back and forth game. Goals were scored by Harding, two, Terpstra and Wheeler. Goderich scored three. McArter and Jarron Thompson played well in net. Atom Reps battle Elma Logan The Blyth Atom Local League played the first game of the season in Zurich, on Oct 18. The Zurich team opened the scoring in the first with a pair of goals, followed up with a couple more in the second, Blyth’s Carson Richmond scored unassisted in the second. Zurich would add three more in the third to take the game 7-1. Blyth travelled to Listowel on Oct 24. They had a much better game than the week before. Drew Van Wyk scored assisted by Owen Andrews in the first. Blyth went on to score four more in the second, off the sticks of Josh Gibbons, Jeremy Wilts, Andrews and Damon Allen, Assisting were Van Wyk, Richmond and Gibbons. Richmond increased the lead scoring two more in the third assisted by Van Wyk and Gibbons. The final score was 7-0 for Blyth. Earning the shutout was Franklin Marshall. Blyth travelled to Drayton on Halloween. The boys came out to play (even with some of them not feeling 100 per cent) and it was a close game throughout. After several chances at both ends of the ice, Drayton took the lead in the second. Blyth kept working but was stopped on several chances by the Drayton goalie. Drayton wscored another late in the third to take a 2-0 lead which held to the end. Blyth’s first home game of the season was Nov. 1 against Teeswater. This was another close hard- fought game. There were several chances to score at both ends of the ice but excellent goaltending by goalie Jeremy Wilts kept Blyth in the game until the final buzzer. Richmond scored the team’s only goal with a perfect pass from Cameron Gauthier. Teeswater answered in the second to tie it. The game remained knotted to the end. The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls played two home games on the weekend. Things got started in Blyth on Halloween against Tiverton. Mackenzie Nesbitt scored two unassisted goals in the first period with the visitors netting one. Leanne Plunkett scored an unassisted goal in the second period, that would prove to be the game winner. Tiverton would come within one early in the third period and continue to apply pressure for the equalizer. After a scramble with five minutes to go, Autumn Wightman relieved the Tiverton pressure by firing a hard-clearing shot, that beat the Tiverton goalie. Taylor Higgins added a further insurance goal with two minutes to go, with assists going to Caitlin Scarrow and Tiffany Deitner. The final score was 5-2. The second game was on Sunday in Brussels against Kincardine. The home team got out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Nesbitt and Teresa Atkinson with the game winner. Assists went to Faith Sebastian, Nesbitt and Ashley Stevenson. The team hung on for a 2-1 victory. On the money The Blyth/Brussels PeeWee girls were home taking on Tiverton last weekend and sent the visitors home with a 5- 2 loss on Saturday. (Shawn Loughlin photo) PeeWee girls win 2 The Brussels PeeWee Reps have had two games and a tournament this past week. Wednesday night, Oct. 21 they faced off against Blyth. It was a very rough game with both sides earning several penalty minutes. Despite this, Brussels skated away with a 4-2 win. Goals were netted by Wyatt Ducharme, Scott Dolmage and Mitch Kellington with two. Assisting were Ducharme, Tom Waechter, Austin Johnston and Hayden TenPas. Keeping the puck from getting to goalie Matt McNichol were defencemen Colton Hastings, Luke McCutcheon, Reece McArter and Nic Zwep. Thursday night saw Brussels travel to Wingham for an exhibition game. Again, Brussels came out on top. Scoring for Brussels were TenPas, assisted by Kellington. Ducharme netted two, one assisted by Kellington, the second, unassisted on an empty net. The final score was 3-1 for Brussels. Local Atoms enjoy victories When you need to get the job done ~ Call us!
