HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-11-05, Page 2I have a wee bouquet of purpleviolets sitting on the counter. MotherNature certainly knows how to makepeople smile. While tucking away the last of theHalloween temptations, a nice patchof the pretty purple flowers wasdiscovered.Perhaps because of a recent deathor maybe because November is such
a strange month, I was thinking about
past events, the old nursing home,Callander and the people who passthrough our lives.Francis O’Keefe was a nameknown only to folks with a direct linkto Callander or since ’91 Braemar. Hedied last week. As a ward of thegovernment Francie had no historicalfamily. He was of limited functionbut did his part in life by getting staff,
visitors and volunteers to show
compassion, concern and love tosomeone so limited. He seemed to touch the cord in allof us that said – who are we, why arewe here and what can I leave behind. He was our lesson in that we are allimportant and that everyone canteach something. So thanks Francis for the all thelessons you taught us –
communication, observation,
compassion, understanding and most
of all love.
The violets are involved in that
Edna Pearson always picked some on
her walk to work to share with the
residents, especially Francis. Ah,
memories.
The costumes parading the streets
of Brussels on Saturday night were a
joy. We enjoy the doorbell ringers
mostly to see how they’ve changed
and where their imagination is this
year. It really is a strange night, one
of those unreasonable things we do
that is just too much fun to stop.
Now it’s time to tuck all the orange
and black treasures back into the
suitcases, have a wee rest and think
about the details of Christmas
coming.
School buildings are on the agenda
of many. Wednesday night at
Brussels school was the time to show
concern for the impending decisions
regarding our young friends’place of
education. The next meeting is at
Grey Central at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2.
These meetings are for
information, discussion, reason,
impact and understanding on all
sides. Your support is needed.
It’s poppy time – time to think
about the sacrifice of so many, so we
can have the life of privilege that we
enjoy.
We will never know the horrors of
war. We will never know the life-
changing experience for so many
families. We will never know the
grief that came to so many lives. All
we can do is hear the stories, respect
the veterans still with us and do our
very best to live a life of peace
wherever we are.
Wear your poppy and attend the
service on Nov. 11. It’s all we can do
to say thanks.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
