Blyth played a good game. There were lots of checks and opportunities for both teams, during the game. Drayton scored the first goal in the second period and added a second shortly after. Drayton increased the lead to three partway through the third before Bulldog Wes Thompson scored Blyth’s only goal of the game with an assist going to Mike Van Wyk. The final score was 3-1 for Drayton. On Oct. 19 the Dogs travelled to Ripley to face the home team. Blyth’s Ryan Nesbitt opened the scoring in the first with help from Spencer Stevenson. On the next faceoff Matt Van Wyk scored with help again from Stevenson. Ripley got one past goalie Kennan MacDonald then Mike Van Wyk scored his first of the game, with an assist to Nathan Plunkett. In the second period Wyatt Carey, S. Stevenson scored with assists going to Van Wyk and Plunkett. The third period saw Blyth’s Mike Van Wyk score two more with assists going to Plunkett and Rob Gordon. The final score was 7-4 for Blyth. Game three saw Blyth host the BCH AE team on Oct. 21. Blyth opened the scoring in the first with Stevenson knocking on home from Matt Van Wyk, then Joel Pizzati scored his first on a great shot with help from Mike Van Wyk, who completed Blyth’s first period scoring unassisted. BCH added one for them late in the first. Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the second. The third period saw the teams exchange three goals apiece. Blyth scorers were Mike Van Wyk with two and Matt Van Wyk. Assists were by Braydon Whitfield. Each team also picked up four penalties each. The final score was 6-4 for Blyth. The Brussels PeeWee Reps started their season Friday night, Oct. 16 in Zurich. Tim Waechter started the scoring part way through the first period, assisted by Scott Dolmage. Wyatt Ducharme netted one shortly into the second, assisted by Dolmage. Minutes later, Ducharme netted another. Zurich came back to tie it up. Late in the third, Waechter scored his second of the night, again, assisted by Dolmage and Ducharme. This gave Brussels a 4-3 lead and they held that to win the game. Goalie Matt McNichol did extremely well in net. This team is coached by Tyler Campbell and Kyle Stephenson. Their home games will be Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls got their season started off with games against BCH in Clinton and in Blyth against Upper Maitland Mustangs. The season opener was in Clinton against a young BCH squad on Oct. 19. The visitors got off to a quick start and cruised to an 11-0 win. Goal scorers were Mackenzie Nesbitt, four; Ashley Higgins, three; Taylor Higgins, Leanne Plunkett, Emma Strome and Emily Mitchell. Lindsay Shiell and Carlie Ducharme split the duties in net for the shutout. The next game was against the Upper Maitland Mustangs (Howick/Wallace) in Blyth on Oct. 24. Autumn Wightman and Ashley Higgins combined for the first goal against a surprised Mustang goalie. Nesbitt would add another early in the second period with the assist going to Ashley Stevenson. The Mustangs got a goal right off the faceoff late in the second period. After the intermission to clean the ice, the home team settled in to protect the lead in the third, but surrendered the tying goal with two minutes left in the game. The final score was 2-2. The Blyth Midget Local League came out to Minto eager to play. The game started with end-to-end action and Minto scoring the first goal. Blyth continued to challenge the Minto team, but again the opposing team scored before the first was over. Blyth regrouped and came out strong in the second with goals from Lucas Cooke, assisted by Ryan Sjaarda, then another awesome unassisted goal by Cooke. In the second period the team lost Dana Teed to an injury, but the remaining nine players continued to give the fans and their coaches their best efforts. By the end of the second the score was 3-2 for Minto. In the third the boys continued to play hard, but Minto netted two more goals before the final buzzer. Ryan Baker played an exceptional game in the net. PeeWee Reps edge Zurich 4-3 The Blyth-Brussels Atom girls team got their season started with an exhibition game on Sunday, Oct. 18 in Blyth against the Mount Forest Rams. With some new players and some returning after a year off from hockey, the game had a tentative start with neither team scoring in the first period. The team's first goal of the season came in the second period from Delayna Smith with the assist going to Samantha Kerr. Those two would each score again in the final minute of the second with an assist going to Sydney Michie. Mount Forest got on the board early in the third period and would be the only goal surrendered in a good performance in net by Julia Beaven. Smith would complete her hat trick less than a minute later. The final score was 4-1. Go girls The Blyth/Brussels Atom girls took on Normanby at the Blyth arena on Sunday afternoon. It was a great outing for the squad as they shellacked their visitors by a score of 8-0. (Vicky Bremner photo) Atom girls beat Mount Forest 4-1 Blyth PeeWee Rep Bulldogs were unable to put off their second win of the year losing only by two to the Brussels Bulls. The final score of the game was 4-2. The first goal went to Curtis Raynard, assisted by Dustin Pennington. The second goal in the second period was scored by Jeremy Grisdale and Justin Rodger. In a game against Zurich, the tired team let Zurich run the show and took home a 4-2 loss. The goal in the second period was Pennington receiving the pass from Van Soest and Plunkett. The second goal was scored by Coultes with the pass from Pennington. The Zurich team played hard in the second period when they saw Blyth was out of steam.
