A week of little things happening
at the Brussels Legion Branch.
Repair people have been
necessary for a couple of important
items at the Branch. First the oven
needed repair in the kitchen. A
malfunctioning pilot light caused
concern, but now the kitchen is back
to full use again. Then, the cooler
compressor, decided to act up.
The Friday night supper of
Octoberfest sausage and sauerkraut
was enjoyed by a good crowd of
over 35 people. Guest chef next
week will be Sandra Josling and
friends and they will be serving
breaded pork cutlet.
The Just for Fun group played for
the first time this fall and those
enjoying supper also enjoyed some
great music. The trio of Don and
Dale Chesher and Ron Howatt play
the old-time songs that everyone
loves. They sing along and enjoy the
fun and laughs that sometimes can
happen.
The group will be playing once a
month and we invite everyone to
drop in and enjoy.
The Comrade veterans of Branch
218 attended the Zone veterans
banquet at Exeter Branch on Sunday
afternoon. There were 12 attending -
Ross and Marg Bennett, Glenn and
Jean Bridge, Forrest Whittard and
Olave, Bill Steadwell and Olive,
George Adams, Cecil Moore and
George and Bernice McWhirter.
There was an afternoon of music
followed by a roast beef dinner.
There were over 100 people out to
support the fish fry hosted by
MADD of Huron Bruce at the
Branch on Sunday night.
The fish fry crew included Linda
Bird, Randy White, Eric Ross,
Harold Bridge, Rick McDonald and
Sharon Robbins.
The fryers are now put away for
the season and a well-deserved rest
for the crews will be enjoyed.
Mixed double darts are this
weekend and if there are any
interested teams of darters, call the
Branch immediately.
It is poppy drive this Saturday and
the Branch needs drivers to come
out and help. They can assist by
driving Cadets to Walton, Ethel
Cranbrook and to the farthest edges
of the town and return them safely to
the Branch.
The canvass is from 9 a.m. to 11
p.m. so contact the Branch or just
arrive before 9 a.m.
Comrades who are able to walk
the areas close to the Branch are also
to be at the Branch.

The October meeting of the
Melville Guild and WMS was a
special meeting with guests from the
twin society, South Kinloss WMS.
The meeting was held in the
church parlour on Tuesday evening,
Oct. 20 with 11 members and 10
guests present.
Leona Armstrong opened the
meeting by reading the Psalm of
Praise and the WMS Purpose was
read in unison. The hymn, Lord of
Light was sung and the scripture
Ephesians 3: 10-13 was read by Mrs.
Armstrong.
Mary Huether led in prayer and a
piano duet was played by Mary and
Heather Douma.
The hymn, Take My Life and Let
It Be was sung.
Mrs. Armstrong introduced the
guest speakers, Roberta Fryers and
Helen Bacon. They are nurses who
have lived very interesting and
fulfilling lives working in a hospital
in Thailand.
They spoke on their work with
patients with leprosy.
The Kinloss women thanked
Melville Guild for their hospitality.
The meeting closed with a prayer
read by Mrs. Armstrong.
We’re heading for the last of
October. I must be having a good
time. It doesn’t seem that long ago
we were getting back from Alberta
and that was mid-September and
now another month has been spent.
The gathering continues as the
weather permits – lawns andflowerbeds are getting the lastcleanup, leaves are removed fromthe eaves, the last of the bulbs areplanted and the last of the tuck-injobs are done for another year. The winter check list surfaces –vehicle oiled, winter boots fit, mittsfound, scraper ready, winter tires on,you know the drill, you just have to
do it.
Commencement at F.E. Madill
Secondary School went well last
Friday night. The large crowd was
there to celebrate the efforts of the
graduates over the past few years.
Everyone was excited to get their
diploma which is a pretty important
document today.
Above and beyond awards weregiven to several students in our areafor various subjects. Ben Procter,Emily Kerhof, Evan Ducharme,Melinda Dorsch, Darby Alcorn, KariBell, Kristen McArter, JanelleBondi, Anna Hiebert, AnnamiekaKerkhof and Lindsay Watson wereall recognized for their excellentwork during their high school years.
As valedictorian Lindsay had the
honour of speaking to the audience,
representing all the hard work and
hours of effort it takes to make it this
goal. So to everyone of you, well
done and we’re watching for your
next accomplishment.
The Haunted Church was once
again lots of fun. I’ve decided that
the volunteers that make the churchspooky and scary, probably havemore fun than the paying customers.Mind you the screams and laughsheard each night were prettyconvincing of a good time being hadby all.The scary beast in the elevatorwins for the best story. She was alittle bored and sent a text message
to her friend. The message got
scrambled and the OPP got involved
much to the shock of the innocent
occupant of the elevator.
Things got sorted out to
everyone’s satisfaction and relief
and the text lady has decided she’ll
leave her phone at home next year.
So Happy Halloween to all. It’s a
good time to have a little fun.
Bye Now, Betty G.W.
