PAGE 7.The Majestic Women’s Institute inBrussels celebrated its 70thanniversary last week with nearly 30members past and present.Majestic was formed in 1939 byMrs. Harold Speir, the Huron EastDistrict WI president. Initially there were 34 members and no common meeting place. Meetings were held at Speir’s home and eventually at the homes of other members until 1947. The name Majestic was chosen to commemorate the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in the year of the group’s inception. In the early years of the WI, there was a great deal of war work. The ladies knitted socks and many boxes were packed and sent to Canadian soldiers overseas. Eventually, however, the WI began to hold bake sales, parties, tea, lunches and dances. They also sold tickets for quilts, much like they do today. Throughout the years the WI has contributed time, gifts and money to various organizations, including children’s shelters, the Canadian Cancer Society, scholarships, bursaries, music festivals, local fairs, the redecoration of town hall and the Brussels Library, baby shows, making gift boxes and helping fire victims. The WI continued to expand. In 1946 the WI was asked to appoint female directors to the Brussels Fall Fair board and in 1947 the WI’s meeting place was moved to the Brussels Library. In 1950, the WI was asked to assist in the renovation of Brussels Town Hall and shrubs and flowers were also planted at the Brussels Public Library. In 1953, the WI banded together with the Brussels Lions and bought new blinds and the floor of the library were sanded and finished. This is also the year the WI began to contribute to Huron County scholarships. A quilt was designed with over 1,000 names of Brussels residents on it in 1972 and the WI also entered a winning float into the Fall Fair parade. The organization of the Senior Citizen’s group also receivedcontribution from the WI, which wasinstrumental in the formation of thatgroup. In 1979, Majestic celebrated its50th year with a pot luck dinner atthe old town hall with 130 people in attendance. In 2004, Majestic celebrated its 65th anniversary at the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship and in 2008, the women donated funds to the residents of Huronlea for a new gazebo and to the upgrading of a butterfly garden in the conservation park in Brussels. Each year the WI members have toured local industries while going on mystery tours and many meetings involved local speakers who have educated the members on many things over the years. Leona Conley, a charter member, is still living to see the 70th anniversary of this great organization. Past presidents include: Peggy Cudmore from 1971-1972, 1973- 1976, 1984-1986 and 1990-1992; Mrs. James Armstrong from 1972- 1973; Doris McCall from 1976-1979 and 1991-1992; Dorothy Steffler from 1979-1982; Marie McTaggart from 1982-1984; Kathy Bridge from 1986-1988 and 2003-2005; Edna McLellan from 1988-1990 and 1997-1999; Leona Armstrong from 1992-1993; Ruth Bauer from 1993- 1995 and 2005-2008; Ruth Sauve from 1995-1997; Peggy Keffer from 1999-2001; Lucy Hesse from 2001- 2003 and Yvonne Knight from 2008- present.
