One of the fastest ways to add
warmth to a room and a “lived-in”
appeal is to place artwork on the
walls. You can certainly scour home
decor shops or art stores for the
perfect pictures, but why not use the
subject matter you have on hand --
your own family?
Simply snapping a few images of
your family from different artistic
perspectives (avoiding posed shots)
and framing these prints
inexpensively, you can create an
entire gallery of amazing
photography.
To make your images stand out
and look like professional prints, it
pays to follow a few tips.
1. Lighting:Take the photos in
natural light, which will best
complement your subject. Keep the
light source behind you while taking
the picture, so that your subject will
not appear washed out.
2. Contrast:Place a high-contrast
background behind your subject so
the background is not competing
with the person or object in the
forefront. A black or white sheet can
serve this purpose well.
3. Colour:Colour images have
their place, but there is something to
be said about the classic appearance
of black-and-white or sepia-toned
images. They can impart drama and
lend themselves well to the cohesive
tone of your home gallery.
4. Scale:Not every picture should
be a portrait shot. Experiment with
wide shots and close-up shots. A
zoomed-in shot of a child’s hands or
a silhouette in the distance can make
for thought-provoking images.
5. Picture composition:Change
the angle, height and alignment of
your shots to create interest. For
example, when framing a subject, try
it off centre for visual interest. Lie
on the floor and take images from an
upward direction.
When photographing children, get
down to their level.
And don’t worry about everything
being in focus. Sometimes a grainy,
slightly over-exposed feeling can
add a touch of whimsy to the image.
6. Camera:Now might be the
time to invest in a high-quality
camera. Look for a minimum of 8
megapixels, which is often standard
on most brands nowadays. You want
a high enough resolution on your
images to be able to enlarge them to
5 x 6 and 8 x 10 sizes.
After you’ve shot and framed all
of your images, practise the
arrangement before you commit to a
wall location. Some stores sell
framing kits that feature a grid to
take the work out of decoratively
arranging pictures. Once the images
are hung, install some accent
lighting to illuminate your gallery.
