(NC)—Doctors, musicians,
political leaders – everyone has a
particular skill set, but not everyone
is willing to share the tips and trends
of their trade.
Fortunately, Sally Morse, director
of creative services for Hunter
Douglas, North America's leading
custom window fashions
manufacturer, likes to share. She's
offering the following 10 steps on
decorating the perfect room:
Colour:The most beautiful rooms
look best when three or four
complementary colours are used
together.
Furnishings:Don't be too
“matchy-matchy” with furnishings.
Determine what type of tables,
dressers, sofas and chairs you like
and make sure they are sized
properly for the dimensions and
layout of the room.
Furniture Placement:Place your
furniture in shapes derived from the
alphabet such as L, X or U, making
sure whatever shape you use works
best with the size and shape of the
room.
Lighting:Add drama and style to
any room using items such as lamps,
chandeliers and wall sconces.
Window Treatments: Choose a
selection of window treatments that
combine function and beauty.
Flooring:Select a type of flooring
that best complements the room.
Don't overlook items like wool area
rugs – sheep don't shrink in the rain,
so don't be afraid of wool carpeting
getting wet. In fact, it's the most
versatile option and cleans the best
as well.
Walls:Add style with colour, be it
using paint or wallpaper. Remember
that you can add texture as well with
grasscloth wallcoverings, pearlized
paint finishes and the like.
Hard Accessories:Use hard
items such as mirrors, pottery,
paintings, photos and glass around
the room. Particularly when
grouping photos, place smaller ones
above the large ones to avoid a “top-
heavy” look.
Soft Accessories:Combine the
hard accessories with softer items,
including pillows, curtains, silk
flowers, tablecloths and plants to
create warmth. Make sure an equal
number of hard and soft accessories
are used in the room for a nice
balance.
Personality:Add your own
personality to the room to make it
your own space. Show off your
interests and hobbies in a creative
way, using your own sense of
style…and humour.
By implementing these tips, you'll
be 10 steps closer to having the
perfect room.
10 steps to decorating the perfect room
Because mold and mildew
commonly grow in the same types
of environments --warm, damp
areas -- they are often mistaken for
one another. In actuality, mold and
mildew are different types of fungi
despite sharing many similar
characteristics, including
spreading out from spores.
Mildew is found more often in
showers, fabrics and paper, while
mold is more often found in foods.
Mold can range in colour from
black to red to green, while mildew
is typically white or grey.
Although both mold and mildew
can be problematic for individuals
with allergies or asthma, it's
typically mold that causes people
to be most wary. That's because
some molds have toxins called
mycotoxins to which some people
may be severely allergic.
Inhalation of certain molds can
also cause respiratory problems.
Mildew can generally be cleaned
off of hard surfaces with a mildew
cleaner or a bleach-and-water
solution. If mold is very prevalent
in a home, it may be best to call in
a professional to determine the
best course of removal to prevent
spores from spreading and causing
health problems.
