The Citizen, 2009-10-08, Page 19A small crowd attended the
service at Duff’s United Church this
week. The Don and Monique Baan
family greeted those attending.
Happy birthday was sung to Helen
Craig.
Jacob McGavin provided the
minute for missions and described
how monies received for missions
are also used to aid in education
purposes for those in need in our
area.
Neil McGavin was the scripture
reader for the World Communion
Sunday.
Rev. Peter’s sermon was entitled,
The Kingdom of Little Children. It
dealt with the facts that children are
open to learning and believing and
are open minded to remembering
stories learned from the Bible. They
worship with an openness of joy and
adults should try and view the world
through the eyes of a child, that they
too may enter the Kingdom of God.
The offering was collected by Jeff
McGavin and Don Baan.
Communion was served by John
and Pat Gillis and Barry and Karen
Hoegy.
A Walton Board meeting was
announced for Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
The fowl supper is just around the
corner, Nov. 4 and tickets should be
out and around.
The sacrament of baptism will be
held Nov. 15 and parents interested
in having children baptized should
contact Rev. Peter at 519-887-8240.
Duff’s United is looking for a
UCW treasurer as of Jan. 1 as well as
for a secretary for bulletins and
announcements.
The church is still fundraising by
collecting grocery tapes from Zehrs,
Foodland and Scrimgeour’s. If
everyone saves the tapes, they add
up quite nicely.
The church also collects used
printer cartridges.
Old eye glasses are being collected
to be sent to Haiti. These items can
be dropped off in the boxes provided
in the kitchen.
The kitchen is looking good with
the new cupboard and countertops
installed. New sinks have yet to be
installed.
The Food Bank donations have
been quite low and the need is as
great as ever. Suggestions are peanut
butter, soup and canned vegetables at
this time.

The breast option
About 25 Huron County mothers and their children gathered in Clinton, Oct. 1 to celebrate
National Breastfeeding Week. The Huron County Health Unit organized the event to promote
breastfeeding and the support offered to breastfeeding mothers. The theme was Eat Local —
Breastfeed. (Photo submitted)
The biggest news and yet no news
story around Walton occurred on
Friday evening. There were police
everywhere, stretched just south of
Winthrop, to the T at the county
roads and down into the village.
There were officers with big
spotlights looking everywhere
around buildings, in fields, ditches,
into the nearby bushes for
“surveillance of the area”.
Numerous homeowners asked the
officers what was going on, but of
course no information was provided
to them. The biggest police presence
was before midnight but there were
still cruisers around the village on
Saturday morning.
I didn’t hear anything on the news
on Saturday about this, so it’s still a
mystery to us all.
A correction on which Hackwell
son was home to help out Mert and
Doreen. It was their son Blaine from
Milwaukee. He has since returned
and reports are that Mr. and Mrs.
Hackwell are coming along.
Our get-well wishes go out to
Olene Dennis as she is hobbling due
to having some surgery on her foot.
Reports are that Edith Wey is a
patient at this time in Clinton
hospital, recovering from hip
surgery.
We hear that Mary Dilworth is
coming along well, but will be
awhile yet before she is fullyrecovered.Margery Huether has returnedfrom a Mediterranean cruise. Shehad 10 days of wonderful sights, scenes and weather. The trip started in Rome and shevisited Monaco, the Isle of Capri,Santorini as well as stopping at portsin Greece, Kusadasi in Turkey,
before returning from Venice.
She enjoyed the trip, met some
wonderful new friends, but is always
glad to be home to the Seaforth and
Walton area.
An area couple has also been on a
Mediterranean cruise. Ross and
Mary Procter flew to England and
boarded the Queen Mary II at
Southampton to begin their 2 1/2
week trip.
The luxury boat held 2,600
passengers and 1,200 crew members
and is higher than the Statue of
Liberty. The boat itself sits 30 feet
deep in the water and has a speed of
35 miles an hour.
Mary reports that you could feel
no rocking or rolling movement
while sailing.
They had a lovely cabin and
delicious food was served at the 6
p.m. or 8:30 p.m. sittings.
They were seated at a table with
two other couples and the one couple
has been married for 69 years and
are 90 and 91 years of age. Ross
reports that he couldn’t believe how
active this couple was and they have
invited the Procters to visit them
next year in England.
There were two shows of nightly
live entertainment to enjoy, and one
of the theatres held 2,000 people for
a show.
The cruise stopped at Barcelona,
Spain. The Procters report that the
city was very clean and they were
quite impressed by the beautiful
sculptures. There were stops inPortugal, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Piezaand Florence, Italy. They could have taken the three-hour bus ride into Rome, Italy, but asthe Pope wasn't present they didn’tbother. There was a stop at Monte Carloand they report that it has gotten verybig. They report that they didn’t
bother to do any gambling.
Returning to England, they had
four days to enjoy London. They
stayed at a hotel very close to
Buckingham Palace, and even
attended tea there. Unfortunately, the
Queen was not at home, but they
report that they enjoyed the
experience and the facilities.
They attended the theatre one
evening to see the stage production,
The Mouse Trap. This show is the
longest-running play in history
having been performed for 57 years
and the Procters report it was
excellent. They had a wonderful trip
but like many are always glad to be
home.
George and Fannie Somers have
returned home from a ten-day trip to
the west. They accompanied Gerald
and Joan Miller home to
Clairesholme, Alberta. They headed
to Manitoulin and crossed on the
Chi-Cheemaun and had pretty good
weather for the trip. They had a good
week with the Millers and a great
time.
The Somerses also spent a day
with Bill and Fran (Myers)
McQuarrie in Calgary. They enjoyed
a great visit with their friends and
are happy to be home.
Congratulations to newlyweds
Scott and Erin Henderson. Scott is
the son of Murray and Carol
(Wilbee) Henderson and grandson of
Ian Wilbee. The wedding was held in
Stratford and the reception was at
the Stratford Golf and Country Club.Attending from our area were Brian,Keith, Gloria, Kevin and MarkWilbee and me. I was attending as aguest on the bride’s side of thefamily, as I accompanied my motherwho is Erin’s great aunt. The couple will be residing inSeaforth. There have been more changes
around the area. The barn has been
taken down at the farm of Scott
McDonald. It certainly changes the
look on the horizon from our view.
In the village of Walton a mobile
home has arrived on the lot near the
old rail line. It is high and dry on
blocks at this time.
The shed at the farm of Valerie
Shortreed is almost complete and
looks good.
