held a community concert over the
weekend to thank all of the friends
and family who had been there for
him over the years.
The concert just happened to
coincide with the 50th anniversary
of his entrance into the teaching
profession.
That wasn’t all there was to it
though, Coultes says. He says he has
noticed a decline in community
concerts in recent years and wanted
to do his part to showcase some localtalent and get members of thecommunity out for a night with theirfriends and neighbours.“I did it for the appreciation for thehelp and friendship the communityhas given me not just over the last 50
years, but for the last 73,” he said.
Coultes says he wanted to see
everyone together, but that he
wanted to see the talent in the
community showcased. He says
there isn’t much of a forum for such
talent anymore and he wanted to try
and change that.
“We don’t have much in the way
of community concerts or theatre
anymore,” he said. “So I wanted to
do my part and arrange a
presentation of talent. Plus it was
nice for everyone to get together that
night.”
Over 180 people got together on
Saturday night at the Auburn Lion’s
Hall.
Approximately 20 performers
graced the stage, taking the chance
to provide a diverse performance
featuring violinists, pianists and
dramatists to name a few.
The night was sponsored by the
Blyth Masonic Lodge. Coultes was
celebrating 33 years in the teaching
profession, having spent time in
Chesley, Markdale, Flesherton and
Listowel as a high school English
teacher.
The master of ceremonies was
Dan Stewart of Cargill. Stewart was
formerly a student of Coultes. Later
in their lives they developed a
friendship resulting in Stewart
asking Coultes to be the best man at
his wedding.
Performers included Arnold
Bruce, Ethel Adams, CatherineMacDonald, Edith Walker, CarlSikma, Phyllis Mitchell, JohnMcIntosh, Frank Hallahan, Rev. andMrs. John Roberts, Gladys VanEgmond, John Jewitt, Rick Elliott,Connor and Emerson Stewart, DanWard, George and Elizabeth Procter,John McDowell, Kirby Cook,Catherine Peach and SadieChalmers, Lexi Aitken, RachelBezaire and Coultes himself.THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2009.
