On the ball The teams were on the field in the rain for a good cause last weekend in Ethel while BZGZ took on Ball-Less at a slo-pitch tournament. The teams were competing on behalf of the McCarty family of Listowel, who have two children, Xander, one, and Chase, three, who have been afflicted with cancer, but are currently in remission. (Shawn Loughlin photo) The Friday night euchre at the Cranbrook hall had seven tables at play. It was hosted by the C&B ladies. Share the wealth was won by Beryl Smith and Sharon Freeman. Travelling lone hand winner was Stewart Steiss. Other winners were: high lady, Myrna Burnett; low lady, Leona McDonald; ladies’lone hands, Joyce Alexander; high man, Sharon Freeman; low man, Allan Edgar; men’s lone hands, Wayne Ward. Lucky tally winners were: Norm Dobson, Helen Dobson, Leslie Knight, Delphine Dewar, Jean Dewar, Viola Adams, Allan Martin, Beryl Smith, Judy Hahn, Dorothy Dilworth, Jim Minielly, Ruth Ward, Murray Hoover, Yvonne Knight, Bob Alexander and Mary Davidson. The next euchre will be held in the hall on Friday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. 7 tables in play at Cranbrook euchre Sports There was a complete turnaround in the weather this past week and the Wingham Golf and Curling Club sure felt the difference. A cold wet start to the week hopefully isn’t a sign of what October weather is going to be. The Tuesday night ladies were unable to golf but enjoyed their closing night with supper in the clubhouse. Twenty-six of the gals came out and relaxed, chatted and shared some laughs. Linda Walker has taken over the job as ladies’captain. Carol Oriold, former captain, did a great job and will help Linda maintain the quality of leadership and organization in the future. Good luck Linda. The Wednesday men had a cold wet morning but some of the diehards came to golf. Winners were: Wayne Gordon, first; Jamie Sanderson, second; and Bill Johnston, third. Thursday night men had their final official night but weather permitting can, and I am sure will, still be out for a few more weeks. Buff’s group tried a different format this week as every golfer was only allowed two clubs of their choice and a putter. A nice light bag and very interesting strategy. The winners were: closest to the pin, Richard Watson; longest putt, Dwight Leslie, John Nicholson and Watson; hidden score, Perry Haulk and Neil Bieman. The low gross was Dave Gamble with a 32. Saturday the club hosted a three- man scramble tournament. Twenty- seven golfers came keen to play in this 18-hole, best-ball event. But after three stoppages due to rain and lingering clouds the boys called it quits after nine holes. Cheryl served the guys lunch and they all left almost dry and in good spirits. OUT OF BOUNDS It was great to see a couple teams from Blyth out playing in our three- man scramble this past weekend. Chip and a Put – By Bruce Skinn BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED
