The Citizen, 2009-10-08, Page 2While blood is in you to give, hair
is on your head to give.
Thousands of people have done it
over the years. They’ve cut their hair
to help make hairpieces and some
without long locks to give have even
shaved their heads in aid of
fundraising for cancer research.
Three years ago Annie Prout’s
grandmother Barbara Nichol had
been diagnosed with cancer and
Prout decided to cut her hair. She
contributed her beloved hair to
Locks of Love, an organization
which accepts donations of hair to
make hairpieces for patients going
through chemotherapy who have lost
theirs.
Locks of Love first began in 1997
and now has recipients in 50 states
and throughout Canada.
Now Nichol has found out that she
had developed small cell carcinoma
and needed treatment once again.
This time it wasn’t just Annie, but
her mother and Nichol’s daughter-
in-law Gayle who decided to step up
to the plate and donate the hair they
had been growing for years.
Last week the Prouts made their
way to a stylist who crafted the girls’
hair into a workable style after
Barbara took a turn at the scissors,
cutting of inches of Gayle’s hair.
While both mother and daughter
were happy to give their hard-earned
hair to the cause, Gayle said she
wanted to do it to raise awareness
and let people know how easy it can
be to help someone who has been
struck by cancer.
Gayle said she was very proud to
see Annie take the first leap when
she was just 10 years old and felt
inspired to do the same when she
heard the news about Nichol.
Annie, now 13, had hair down to
her shoulders again and was more
than willing to go under the scissors
once again for a cause close to the
heart of her family.
Nichol is in the process of
receiving chemotherapy treatment in
London.

folk offered a night of music to ourarea on Saturday as well.Highlighting the Beckett Family aswell as lots of local talent, it was agood night for music. For Sunday a potluck lunch wasshared at Brussels United Churchsponsored by the Brussels and areaministerial. After a bountiful lunch,
groups of church folk walked the
village offering words for our world. It was a nice way to celebrate WorldWide Communion Sunday with thepublic. At the Wawanosh Nature Centreon Sunday afternoon, the MaitlandConservation Foundation and theMaitland Valley ConservationAuthority offered wagon rides in the
woods, guided walks, aerial maps of
the farm, a birds of prey
demonstration and education, crafts
for the children, hot dogs and apple
cider.
The weather co-operated and only
one spit of rain was seen.
Carrying the umbrella kept the
rain at bay. Several folks from here
appreciated all the work Esther,
Erin and the board did for our
benefit. Our water needs to be
protected.
Thanksgiving is next week so the
tablecloths need checked, the beds
made, the food prepared to get ready
for the family. Oh what fun, all the
ages and stages to life.
The United Church stewards want
you to mark your calendar for Oct.
16 and 17 when their silent auction
will be ready to roll. Every two years
this committee works hard to offer
you neat items that you didn’t know
you needed. So check the ads, your
calendar and join the fun.
Be thankful for peace, love,
bounty, family and friends.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A little off the top
Gayle Prout, seated, decided to give a fair portion of her hair to the organization Locks of Love,
where it can be made into a hairpiece for a cancer patient who is going through chemotherapy.
Her ‘stylist’, her mother-in-law, Barbara Nichol, was just diagnosed with small cell carcinoma,
making the issue a close one to the Prout family. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
