Sound the alarm — it’s time again for the
Great Canadian Fire Drill! NFPA is asking
kids and families all across North America
to practise their home fire escape plans.
Let’s get started!
Young Children
• You may not be able to reach your children in
the event of a fire, so they should know how to
escape on their own.
• Kids under the age of 3 should participate
in home fire drills, but realistically they may not
be able to escape on their own in a real fire
emergency.
- Arrange to have very young children sleep in
rooms that adjoin or are within easy reach of
rooms where adults or older children sleep.
- As part of your escape plan, designate
someone to take responsibility for helping
young children.

Know your escape plan!
422 Queen St., Blyth
Practising your escape plan can be lots of fun.
But don’t forget that this is serious business. Fire
can grow and spread through your home very
quickly. When the smoke alarm sounds, you need
to act right away and know exactly what to do,
which takes planning and practise.

Make safety a part of your life!
Don’t Get Burned
• Keep hot foods and liquids away from table and counter
edges so they cannot be pulled off or knocked over.
• Have a 3-foot “kid-free” zone around the stove and
anything that gets hot, like a wood stove, portable
heater, or fireplace.
• Never hold a child in your arms while preparing hot food
or drinking a hot beverage.
• Teach children that hot things can burn.
• Be careful when using things that get hot, such as
curling irons, ovens, irons, lamps and heaters.
• Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of
children and in a locked cabinet.
• Wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when cooking.
• Never leave a child alone in a room with a lit candle,
portable heater, lit fireplace, stove, or hot appliance.
Safety Tips:
Just Right?
• To avoid scalds, set the thermostat on your water heater
to no higher than 120 degrees F.
• Consider installing “anti-scald” devices on tub faucets
and shower heads to prevent scalds.
• Test the water before placing a child or yourself in the
tub. Bath water should feel warm, not hot. Before you
put your child in the tub, test the temperature with your
wrist, elbow, or the back of your hand.
Cool a Burn
• Treat a burn right away. Put it in cool water for 3 to 5
minutes. Cover with a clean, dry cloth.
• If the burn is bigger than your fist or if you have any
questions, get medical help right away.
• Remove all clothing, diapers, jewelry, and metal from the
burned areas.
• Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food.
• Keep space heaters 3 feet from anything that can burn.
• Ask smokers to smoke outside and provide a deep,
sturdy ashtray.
• Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children,
preferably in a locked cabinet.
• Inspect electrical cords and replace or repair loose or
damaged cords.
• Extinguish candles when leaving the room or going to
sleep.
• Prepare and practice a home fire escape plan.
• Install smoke alarms.
• Test smoke alarms monthly.
• If you must escape through smoke, get low and go to
your next exit.
The most common types of burn
injuries are fire/flame burns,
scalds, and contact burns. Burns
are painful and can result in
serious scarring and even death.
