September must be known as
meeting month, or maybe it just
seems that way after a nice summer
break. Every organization wants to
get things started so a meeting is
scheduled mid-September.
Anyway, the month has slipped
away, the meetings have been held
and now the business resumes.
If you were out and about last
weekend you’d know that Judy
Hahn had her lawn decorated to help
her with her birthday celebrations. A
surprise was held at her mom’s in
Listowel and to continue the fun it
kept going until it hit Brussels.
She found the decorations on her
lawn quite tasteful except for the
#60 sign. In the mood to recycle,
many of the same unique items
moved to Elizabeth Street to herald
in another year for Sharon Freeman.
On Saturday, Wingham Heritage
Theatre had its opening night. Reeve
Neil Vincent cut the ribbon, the new
manager and board members were
introduced and the music started.
A trio of fun-loving fellows had a
great time offering songs and jokes,
even letting the audience in on the
fun. The performance was named,
Jukebox Opera giving absolutely no
hint of the upcoming content. The
talent on several musical
instruments was awesome. Lots of
original material was shared as well
as songs from Cape Breton, even
one about Elvis being in Tweed.
A reception was held in their new
Box Office/Gallery just next to the
old Lyceum on the main street. A
very nice start to their season.
The congregation of Brussels
United Church was thrilled to learn
that Rene Richmond had been
named Citizen of the Year. We’ve
always been proud of Rene and her
care and concern for our community.
We decided that her work for our
church was part of her nomination
and so we wanted to be sure she
knew, that we knew how kind,
caring, efficient and pleasant she is
in her many capacities for our
United Church.
Sandra Cable called Rene to the
front and Sheila Richards told the
congregation of just a bit of Rene’s
volunteer time and how it helps
others. Of course we know her
organizational skills and feeding
talents and wanted to show our
appreciation.
Ralph Watson presented her with
a pretty fall bouquet.
It’s nice to be able to surprise a
very nice lady. Congratulations
Rene!
Fall is the time for feeding and
music. Check the ads that are out for
many dinners and a variety of
musical events in our immediate
area. Support the local causes and
get your tickets quickly.
The apples are ready and so is the
cider. Enjoy this treat of fall.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Majestic Women’s Institute ofBrussels is back to work after thesummer break. The first meeting was held Sept. 9
in the basement of the Brussels
Library. Twelve members and one
guest met. Some poems were read
by Yvonne Knight.
Leona Armstrong spoke on the
Women’s Institute and told members
to remember to get involved with
family, friends, community, health,
environment, and the Women’s
Institute.
Guest speaker Olivia McHardy
spoke on travel and cruises. Olivia
and her husband have travelled all
over the world. The Mediterranean
was her favourite cruise. She said
people can do as much or as little as
they want on a cruise. There is a
hairdresser, fitness centre, movies,
live entertainment. Book through a
reputable cruise specialist, pay by
credit card in case of cancellation as
they help get your money back, she
said. After the meeting light
refreshments were served.
A dessert card party will be held
near the end of November.
The UFO meeting was held Sept.
8 at Leona Armstrong’s home.
Thirteen attended.
The fall fair was, as always, a
great success thanks to the many
volunteers.
Quilt ticket winners were: first,
Cathrine Campbell of Brussels,
queen-size quilt; second, Alisha
Walker of Brantford, gift certificate
donated by Cinnamon Jim’s and
third Ann Fagan of Midland, gift
certificate donated by Sobeys.
Brussels Women’s Institute hosted
the Institute District executive
committee meeting Sept. 21.
The next meeting is Oct. 14.
