BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Sept. 20 were Mary Lou
Stewart and her daughter Bonnie.
Ushering were Nancy Hakkers and
Hope Button. Bryce Glousher ran
the power point.
The women are starting to make
pies again this fall the first beingSept. 30. Call Joann at 519-523-9274 if you wish to order and to hearof the meetings coming up in thenext week. The call to worship was followedby the first hymn, Beneath the Crossof Jesus and the prayer of approach. The choir anthem was the 23rdPsalm.
The scripture readings were from
Mark 8: 27-36 and Acts 17: 16-28.
The children were asked to come to
the front for their story time. Ally
Glousher lit the candles at the front
of the church.
Rev. Clark asked the children if
they knew what he was holding.
Some said a candy cane and others
said just a cane. Rev. Clark told them
it represented a shepherd’s crook.
Shepherds were poor people but the
one thing they did own was a crook.
They used them for herding the
sheep. It is a walking stick, to keep a
wild animal away from the sheepand if a sheep got into trouble theyused it to rescue the sheep and lift itback to solid ground. God is like thatwith us, he said. He lifts us up out oftrouble. The children went downstairs totheir time of worship and fellowship.Brett Glousher carried the Christcandle down to Sunday school.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was Of Idols and Shepherds. He told
the story of Paul leaving his home
and going to foreign lands. Before
Paul talked to the people he would
try and find out what the people
were interested in. There were two
kinds of people in Athens, the
Epicureans and the Stoics. The
Epicureans prayed to many Gods
and Stoics believed that God was
everywhere. Paul needed to find a
common ground to speak to both
people about God and Jesus.
We are all brothers and sisters in
faith, he said. The church today
needs to look at the needs of the
people and community. If we listen
we might learn things from other
people.
The next hymn was Jesus,
Saviour, Pilot Me was followed by
the offering being received, the
prayers of the community and world
and the singing of The Lord’s
Prayer. The last hymn, Love Divine,
All Loves Excelling was followed
by the Commissioning and
Benediction and the singing of the
Three-Fold Amen.
Everyone was invited downstairs
to celebrate all the summer birthdays
with the Sunday school. A
congregational meeting followed.

Deserving
Citizen editor Bonnie Gropp, right, presented the Citizen of the Year award for the Blyth area
to Janis and Brock Vodden. The committee unanimously selected the couple, who are
perhaps best known for their historic walking tours around the village for visitors. The Voddens
also often open their home to people searching genealogy and have tirelessly worked to
document Blyth’s history. The award is sponsored annually by The Citizen. (Shawn Loughlinr photo)
