Ellen Doris McCall passed away
peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 9,
2009, at the Huronlea Home for the
Aged at the age of 86. She had
enjoyed a fulfilling, active life of
giving and caring, full of family and
friends.
She was born on a farm in
Bennington in Oxford County to J.
Roy Ross and Alberta Hummason on
Nov. 15, 1922. She learned to deal
with adversity at an early age with
the passing of her mother and elder
brother Lloyd during her teen years.
The added responsibility, however,
did not keep her from her education,
completing High School in
Woodstock and a business program
at Westervelt College in London.
It was soon after, that she fell in
love with Bruce McCall, a cheese
maker at Bennington. They married
on June 19, 1943 and over the next
11 years she gave birth to Sharon,
then Bonnie, Robert and Ross.
In addition to making a home for
her family and her father for many
years at Bennington and then on
their west Zorra Twp. beef farm,
Doris became active in many social
organizations including the UCW,
Women’s Institute (becoming a life
member with over 50 years of
service), Daughters of the Nile and
Eastern Star.
Her active participation in these
organizations continued after
moving to Brussels. As the nest
emptied, Doris became more active
outside the home, running the lunch
counter at the Brussels Stockyards
that Bruce managed, and getting her
real estate licence and selling for
Royal Homes.
Never content to sit still, she
increased her community support,
becoming active in the Brussels
Horticultural Society, a volunteer for
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority and District Co-ordinator
for the Canadian Cancer Society (the
disease which took her mother) and
in providing social activities at
Huronlea.
Doris had many pleasures in life,
loving to laugh, dance, play cards,
quilt “with the girls”, travel and
spend time with family and friends.
She loved to dress well with a flare
for fashion. She was a loyal friend
and strong community supporter,
always having time to lend a hand.
And while married to a man with a
strong outgoing personality, she was
an independent thinker with a clear
moral compass and was a strong
proponent of education. While she
didn’t always agree with their
actions or tastes and would let her
children know, she never failed to
support all of her family and was
proud of everyone.
She was predeceased by her
beloved husband Bruce McCall in
1998, a brother Lloyd Ross and son-
in-law Jim Fraser. She was the
cherished mother of Sharon Fraser
and friend Thomas Matheson of St.
Marys, Bonnie and her husband
Barry Hicks of St. Albert, Alberta,
Robert and Bonnie (McInnis)
McCall of Sarnia and Ross and
Frances (Blake) McCall of Brussels.
Doris was the dearly loved
grandmother of Debra (Dave)
Brown, Sherri (Luigi) Fiorino, Lori
(Tyler) Williams, Melanie Fraser,
Lucas McCall, Leisa (Peter) Albers,
Matthew McCall and friend, Julie
Brown, Lacey McCall and friend
Jeff Berlett. She is survived by nine
great-grandchildren, two step-great-
grandchildren and one great-great-
granddaughter.
Friends were received by the
family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Saturday from the Schimanski
Family Funeral Home. The funeral
service was held at Brussels United
Church on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
officiated by Pastor Sandra Cable
and Rev. Cathrine Campbell.
Pallbearers were grandchildren
Matthew and Lucas McCall,
partners of grandchildren Dave
Brown, Luigi Fiorino, Tyler
Williams. Pete Albers and Jeff
Berlett and her unofficially adopted
son Keith McLean.
Burial will be in North Embro
Cemetery, Zorra Twp.
As expressions of sympathy,
memorial donations to the Huronlea
Auxiliary and the Alzheimer Society
are appreciated. On-line

Obituaries
Huron may be hosting the 2010
South Western Economic Alliance
(SWEA) conference.
At the Sept. 2 meeting of county
council, Central Huron councillor
and SWEA secretary John Bezaire
said that sitting around the SWEA
table it “looks like it’s our turn”, he
said in asking council to consider
expressing their intent to host the
event.
Having done some early
investigation, Bezaire said he
believed logistically it would be
fairly easy to form partnerships with
area businesses to pull the event
together.
Bezaire added that it shouldn’t be
a huge cost for Huron as SWEA
budgets for the conference and the
legwork is done by staff. “It would
be us in name.”
Warden Ken Oke of South Huron
suggested that the request be
approved in principle and costs be
obtained. “I know we jumped into an
OSUM (Ontario Small Urban
Municipalities) meeting a few years
ago. It seemed like a good idea then
when we got the costs we said we
couldn’t afford it.”
Bezaire said all he wanted at this
point was council’s approval to
express an intent to host the
conference, not commit.
