HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-09-17, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2009. PAGE 9. It was a special celebration at theCranbrook home of Marion andHarvey Smith on Sunday as thecouple marked their 60thanniversary. The former Marion Pake of
Preston, daughter of Sam and Mary
Pake, and Harvey Smith of RR3,
Brussels, son of Allan and Mabel
Smith were united in marriage Sept.
3, 1949 at the Anglican Church in
Preston.
Attendants were Harvey’s
brothers, Joe and Ross, Marion’s
brother Allen, the groom’s sister
Doreen and the bride’s sisters Helen
and Bonnie. The flowergirl was
Marion’s niece Doreen.
The couple honeymooned in
Montreal before returning to their
home in Kitchener. They later
resided in Preston before eventually
settling at RR3, Brussels.
They both worked at Campbell
Soup, while Harvey also farmed for
a time and Marion kept the home
fires burning.
The Smiths retired 19 years ago
and now enjoy time at the cottage,
fishing, camping and playing
cards.
Four children were welcomed to
the Smith family over the early
years of marriage - Ron, Brenda,
Donna and Lorrie. The family has
grown today to include nine
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
It was another beautiful week of
weather for all to enjoy.
Every night about an hour before
dark, we see a mother deer and her
two fawns come out of the bush and
have a bite to eat. We have been
watching this trio all summer and as
the soybeans start to change colour
the fawns are harder to spot. There
have been a couple of nights, right
after the wheat harvest, they even
came right up to the granary.
Our condolences are expressed to
the family of Doris McCall on her
passing. She was a lovely lady,
whom I met when I first came to
Brussels. She was always smiling
and any time we would meet, we
always had a pleasant visit. Our
sympathies to her family, Bonnie,
Ross, Sharon and Robert and their
families.
Home for a visit and a special
birthday party for his granddaughter
was Rob Smith from Black Falls,
Alberta. Rob was home for a week
and stayed a few days with mom and
dad, Ross and Shirley Smith and
with daughter, Michelle in
Egmondville. He attended the
first birthday of granddaughter,
Mia Haggitt, held at the home
of Mike and Krista Haggitt, Blyth.
He also spent time doing
some renovations at Michelle’s
home. He had a nice visit with
all and has returned home to
Alberta.
Allison (Rapson) Lisle was home
from New York and spent a week
visiting with mom and dad, Dave
and Sharon Rapson. Grandma Beryl
Smith had the Smith family to her
home for a supper gathering in her
honour. The Rapson family,
including Dave, Sharon, Aiden,
Cody, Jesse and Becky and husband
Andrew Courtney, along with Wayne
Smith, Joan and Tom and family, and
Kim and Bruce and family attended.
Allison’s husband Dave arrived
and the couple was off to a wedding
in Ottawa before returning home to
New York.
Congratulations to Murray and
Sandra Pepper on becoming
grandparents again. Their son Brent
and wife Rebecca have welcomed
their first son, Joel, into the Pepper
family. The happy family lives in
Woodstock.
Edna Pearson has returned home
from a two-week vacation in Grand
Bend where she attended her
grandson Kyle’s wedding on Aug. 29
at Oakwood Inn. Kyle is the son of
Nancy and Murray Procter of Irvine,
California. Kyle married Danielle
Dutka of London. The weather was
great and they enjoyed the two
weeks following the wedding at a
couple of cottages at the Bend with
members of the Pearson family.
They were joined by Edna’s
daughters Joyce McLean of London
and Janet Smith of Owen Sound
along with members of their
families. They spent hours at the
beach, watched beautiful sunsets,
cooked meals for as few as four and
as many as 17 and enjoyed the chaos
of a special vacation together.
It was a busy time around Walton
for catering this past week. The
church was the venue for a Blyth
Festival luncheon on Thursday at
noon.
The Walton Hall and hall board
was the venue and hosts for two
Blyth Festival dinners on Friday and
Saturday evenings. Friday night’s
group had 49 diners and Saturday
night was a sellout of 64 diners
enjoying the roast beef dinners. The
hall board helpers were Judy Lee,
Judy Emmrich, Jo-Ann McDonald,
Brenda Linton and Karen Hoegy and
Mary Bernard on Friday and Judy,
Jo-Ann, Judy, Betty McCallum,
Alicia Dick and Zak Fougere
working for his community service
hours on Saturday night.
The Walton Ball Park was busy on
the weekend as it was being used as
a second diamond for the Old Timers
(over 35) League being hosted by the
Winthrop Warriors. They had two
games on Thursday evening, three
games on Friday evening and two
games on Saturday as part of the
tournament. It was nice to see the
park being used and such a good
crowd on hand to watch the
action.
Congratulations to Rob McClure
and Amanda Van Miltonburg on their
engagement.
A theft occurred in Walton in
broad daylight one day last week.
Barney at Dale Milk Transport
building was doing some work
around the building inside and
out. Upon leaving the building at
one point, he realized that his
truck was gone. He called the
police and with the help of OnStar,
they found the location of the
vehicle.
A police crackdown of the area
and a manhunt that included police
dogs, captured the suspect in the
theft.
It is a point well learned that it
only takes a moment for someone to
take advantage of a situation such as
keys left in vehicles. It can happen
anytime and any place, so everyone
take care.
Duff’s United Church, Walton
held a fundraising fish fry on the
weekend. They had over 100 enjoy
the fish dinner and a variety of salads
being served. Patty Banks, Helen
Craig, Judy Lee, Phyllis Mitchell
and Judy Emmrich prepared the
salads. The Brussels Legion fish
fry crew provided the fish and
chips.
Gathering for the celebration of
Harvey and Marion Smith’s 60th
wedding anniversary were many
family and friends of the couple. The
party was held at the couple’s home
at Cranbrook on Sunday afternoon.
The many guests were treated
to cake and goodies and
refreshments. The Smiths have four
children, Brenda, Donna, Ron and
Laurie.
The family gathered for a family
dinner at the Fireside Café earlier in
the weekend. Congratulations to
Harvey and Marion.

Playing dress-up
While the Thresher Reunion in Blyth is always a good bet
for a great time, some visitors take it to the extreme,
dressing up to get a laugh or two from their fellow Reunion
visitors. This family went with the down south country
theme. (Vicky Bremner photo)
