In Lower Lakes Female Hockey
League action, the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning AA Midgets
came up short against the first-place
Toronto Aeros in quarter-final action
of the Stoney Creek Sabres Midget
AA Showcase this past weekend
with a score of 2-0.
The girls opened the tournament
Friday with a frustrating 2-1 loss to
the Durham Lightning, which saw
the Saugeen Maitland girls new
linemates dominate play only to fall
behind late in the third.
Ona Mezenberg, Owen Sound,
managed the only tally in that game.
Game two against Ohio State was
decidedly different with the
Lightning besting the opposition 5-
0. The shutout went to Sarah
McGall, Owen Sound.
Laura Irwin, Point Clark, opened
the scoring with Lindsey Ceaser,
Owen Sound, and Mezenberg each
contributing singles. Dollee Meigs,
Owen Sound, scored twice in the
victory.
The girls started strong,
outscoring the Ontario Hockey
Academy 3-1 on Saturday morning
for their second win of the weekend
with Emily Kelly playing great in
net. Mezenberg and Ceaser scored
again as Marcie Landman, Drayton,
netted the third marker.
The Lightning will be in action
next at home this weekend against
Guelph on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the
Wingham arena.
On Sept. 5 and 6 the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club held the club
championship. This event was a 36-
hole tournament and was played on
two beautiful sunny days.
The ladies’ champion was Linda
Walker. Linda’s front nine 39 on
Sunday led her to victory. The B
flight winner was Sylvia Pewtress
with day one leader Carol Oriold
winning the senior ladies
championship.
On the men’s side Trevor Hopf
won the club championship with a
36-hole score of 158. Ed Daer came
away with the senior men’s
championship.
The Tuesday night ladies enjoyed
a great day to play golf. Many of the
girls said it was the weather they
were looking for all summer.
The ladies match play has come
down to the finals with A flight
having Luanne Kerr playing Sylvia
Pewtress and B flight seeing Janet
Haines against Peg Cameron.
Wednesday the club hosted the
John Mallick Memorial tournament.
Sixty senior men enjoyed 18 holes
of golf followed by a delicious
steak supper.
Low gross and B flight winner
was Paul Herbrand from West
Lorne with a score of 72. A flight
was Dan Campbell of Wingham,
and C flight was Don Bone from
Blackhorse.
Low net winners were Bill Kerr
and with a 64, Brian Skinn and Bob
Gavreluk all club members.
Second low gross winners were
Gerry Durst from Sunset, Wayne
Pearen from Kitchener and Don
Rae of Wingham. Second low net
were Jim Ross, Roger Klages from
Listowel and Ted Hnakowski from
Blackhorse.
Donna Anderson, John’s
daughter, joined the golfers for
supper and presented the trophy to
the champions.
Thursday night men’s had 37
golfers this past week. Winners
were: closest to the pin, Richard
Watson and James Elphick; longest
putt, Bill Kerr and Mark Foxton;
longest drive, Watson; hidden score,
Bryan Lachance; low gross, Steve
Nixon and Rob Harrison.
Saturday, Sept. 12 the Club held
the Brett Cameron Memorial
tournament. Fifty-two friends and
family got together and shared some
stories, enjoyed the golf and a
barbecue steak and chicken
supper.
This is a very emotional day for
many and Brett is truly missed by
the entire community.
Winners of the Brett Cameron
Memorial trophy were Heather
Mill, Brian Mill, Joe Walker and
Mike Logan.
The Wingham club is holding its
seventh annual fall barbecue
Sunday, Sept. 20 from 5 - 7 p.m.
There will also be a silent auction
held on the curling floor. The club is
offering special rates for golfing
that day. Golfers book tee times

OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club was proud to host two
tournaments this past week, the
John Mallick Memorial and the
Brett Cameron Memorial. They
were both great volunteers, fantastic
people and truly missed by the
community.
