The Cadets have begun on
Tuesday evenings, so send your
young people to the Brussels Legion
at 6:45 p.m. if they are interested in
learning about the Army Cadet
Corps.
The officers held a training
weekend at the Branch on the
weekend for the Senior Officers of
the Corps. Some stayed at the
Branch for the night and meals were
provided by the leaders.
Thanks to Comrade Lawrence
Machan for a job well done on
cleaning up the flowerbeds at the
Branch. They look great and are
ready for some fall flowers.
Welcome back to Comrade Sandra
Josling who has been on holidays
this past week and will be back at
her job as bar steward.
Zone convention was held at the
Clinton Branch on the weekend.
Attending from Brussels Branch 218
were President John Lowe and
Comrade Eric Ross.
The Friday night suppers will be
resuming on Friday night, Sept. 25.
We hope all our friends will be on
hand for a roast beef dinner.
The fish fry crew travelled to
Walton and Duff’s United Church to
cook for one of the remaining few
fish fries for the year. Cooking for
the crowd of 101 were Rick
McDonald, Lisa Glanville, George
Adams and Lloyd Glanville. There
are only two more fries scheduled
for the year and both are at Brussels.
This weekend is the fish fry along
with the elimination draw. The
tickets for the draw are almost
completely sold out with just a few
tickets remaining, so good luck to all
on Saturday.
It’s time to pay your membership
dues for the Branch and the early
bird program is in effect for
September, October and November.
Pay your dues and enter your name
in the draw to win your next year’s
dues. There are three draws, one a
month, so pay early and have three
chances at winning.
A reminder that it is the annual
Zone visitation by the Zone
commander on Tuesday evening, so
all Comrades are encouraged to
attend in uniform if available.
Provincial Service Officer Randy
Groundwater will be in the area in
early October so any Comrades
wishing to meet with him need to
contact Branch Service Officer
Mabel Glanville immediately.
In last week’s story about the
Brussels Flying Club, it should have
been reported that on Armstrong’s
property, there are approximately
10 planes owned by five
different private pilots stored there.
In addition, the Flying Club
now splits its time between a
farm near Ethel and a farm near
Seaforth.
We apologize for any confusion
we may have caused.
It was a perfect day for the annualTerry Fox Run with clear skies andtemperatures comfortable for some
outdoor exercise.
Brussels joined approximately 900
other Canadian communities to raise
funds in the fight against cancer that
began with Fox’s Marathon of Hope
Leading the way in Brussels this
year as Team Member was
Bruce Raymond, who was
diagnosed with colon cancer in
spring of 2008. He was followed
throughout the day by 111participants, a slight increase from last year’s numbers. Togetherthey raised $7,405, which was just abit lower than the figure from last2008.
However, said organizer
Doug McArter, it’s up from
the previous two years. “And
the Run is always considered a
success because we are able to
contribute.”
“All in all, it was a great day for
the Terry Fox Foundation and we
appreciate all of the people who
participated, donated or volunteered
to help with the event.”
