By Shannon Ryan
The last week of August was a
busy one for the 4-H Sod Busters
Club.
On Monday, Aug. 24 all members
helped Huron County Plowmen set
up stakes for the plowing match.
Then on Aug. 25 a majority of the
members brought their tractors and
plows to the match and started
practising for their achievement.
This was the time to ask questions,
learn and improve skills.
Each member got a plot to plow.
With the measurements staked out
each member then put in their stakes
and started plowing.
After, they moved to the tent and
had the meeting, which opened with
the 4-H pledge. The minutes from
the last meeting were read and
members discussed how the
achievement day would play out.
The new members got their stakes.
Achievement day started early on
Aug. 27. Members again practised
on new lands and hoped to perfect
the plowing skills needed for their
achievement day. This was the last
chance to ask questions. The judge
Don Dodds briefly went over some
plowing and gave pointers on how
improvements could be made and
what he would be looking for. They
had a brief test and meeting to finish
up any loose ends.
Then they went up to enjoy lunch
provided by the Huron County
Plowmen’s Association which has
supported the club and allowed them
to participate in the plowing match
on Junior day.
The achievement was in the
afternoon. After drawing names
members went back to the field to
their lands. Each was allowed 20
minutes to start and finish the
opening split. Mr. Dodds judged
each one.
They continued plowing down the
crown, casting off and finish. Each
had their challenges, but as the day
progressed members finished the
plowing achievement. They were
invited to compete on Friday, Aug.
28 at the Huron County Plowing
Match. Most members participated.
