Kelsey Falconer, who is about to begin her first year at the Goderich District Collegiate Institute, is in the middle of an intense rehearsal regimen for Grease, this year’s high school production at The Grand Theatre in London. Falconer is just one of five students in their first year of high school selected for the show. After being involved with drama since the age of eight, Falconer is hoping to land a career on Broadway in the future. “I think I would rather be on Broadway than an actress in movies. I like the singing and dancing,” she said. “It’s more difficult, but there’s more of a thrill. If you mess up, you have to find a way to make it work for you.” Falconer began to sharpen her dramatic skills when she was eight, working with Blyth-area drama teacher Shannon Scott at her Serious FUN! theatre camps. It was through Scott’s group that Falconer learned most of what she has put into her performance today, and what she continues to keep putting into her performance throughout high school. It was the last two years of Serious FUN! where she really learned a lot of skills that would prove to be transferrable to the stage of The Grand Theatre in London for Grease, through the group’s Going Pro program. Last year, Falconer travelled withScott and the rest of the SeriousFUN! group to Stratford toparticipate in the Kiwanis Festival, where she was awarded forOutstanding Speech. It was in the Going Pro program that Falconer learned about auditions, resumes, head shots and being in a company being featured at a festival, giving her skills that she was able to use for her auditions and eventual work in London. Falconer auditioned in London in April and began rehearsing in late July. The show will run from Sept. 22 to Oct. 3. Because the Avon Maitland District School Board begins school one week before most other boards, Falconer will have to miss much more than the eight days that the theatre said an actress in the play would have to miss. Falconer has to travel more, which will result in more missed time from school. However, her parents have arranged everything with her teachers, so she will be able to make up for the work she misses while in London. Falconer says she is very excited to begin the production of Grease. She says it’s one of her favourite musicals of all time. She says this will be one of the biggest crowds she has ever performed for, and she is looking forward to the energy she’ll find in performing for them. Tickets for Grease are available at The Grand Theatre box office at 471 Richmond St. in London, by calling 1-800-265-1593 or on-line at www.grandtheatre.com THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2009.
