HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-09-03, Page 7Family, friends and neighbours gathered at Auburn Hall on Sunday, Aug. 30 to honour Carol and Gerald McDowell on their 50th wedding anniversary. Special guests attended from Vancouver, Sudbury, Mississauga, Exeter, London, Port Rowan and Woodstock. It was Sept. 12, 1959 when Rev. Sweeney united the former Carol Armstrong, daughter of Jack and Elva of RR2, Auburn, and Gerald, the son of Norman and Viola McDowell of RR1, Belgrave in marriage. The wedding took place at Auburn’s Knox United Church. Attendants were Marlene (Easom) Baer, Phyllis (Glenn) Feagan, Gwen (McDowell) Laidlaw, Lloyd McDowell, John Buchanan and Fred Armstrong. The flowergirl was Gwen (Mills) Bestard. Following the ceremony the couple took a honeymoon trip to Thousand Islands and Ottawa before returning to their home at RR1, Belgrave. Over the years four children were added to their family: Wayne, Ron, Kim and Patti. They now have nine grandchildren: Michelle, Paige, Johnathon, Adel, Michael, Greg, Adam, Lauren and Caroline. The couple enjoys spending time with their family, especially going to watch their grandchildren play sports. The McDowells moved to Auburn in 1989 and their son, Ron, and his wife Alice and their family now reside on the home farm. While he moved off the farm, Gerald continued to work until 2003 and Carol retired in 2006 from Zehrs Food Plus. They attend the United Church and Carol is a member of the UCW. Gerald served on East Wawanosh council for 10 years. Carol also keeps busy now baking and decorating special occasion cakes. By Kathleen StennettThe Sewing Machines had theirfirst 4-H meeting on Monday, Aug.24 at the Jefferson’s house. Theleader in charge of this club is CathyDrennan.The meeting began outside, with members playing a fun game of Knights, Horses and Cavaliers. Inside they were split into groups of three to write out the 4-H pledge, followed by leaders quizzing the groups. The president is Reba Jefferson, the vice-president is Mary-Kate Higgins and the secretary is Emma Enders. Press reporter is KathleenStennett. The cover design is beingdone by Ellen Jefferson.Members voted on the club name.Each person introduced them-selves and described what they likedabout their clothing as roll call. The leaders showed the members parts of the sewing machine, then the members went back into groups, and matched up sewing machine parts with their definitions. Next, the club members were quizzed on how well they knew the sewing machine. The members and leaders then discussed the measurements of fabric andthemselves.The meeting finished with the clubmotto, and a snack.THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2009. PAGE 7. The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, Aug. 24 with seven tables in play. Winners were: share the wealth, Allan Edgar, Helen Dobson, Dorothy Martin; ladies’ high, Viola Adams; ladies’ lone hands, Beryl Smith; men’s high, Keith Turnbull; men’s lone hands, Allan Martin; low lady, Isabelle Craig; low man, Adrian Verstoep. Lucky tallies were Bush Whittard, Edna McLellan, Helen Cullen, Jean Dewar, Eileen Mann, Grace Stewart, Sharon Freeman, Shirley Verstoep, Judy Hahn, Marion Harrison, Myrna Burnett, Allan Edgar, Hilda Holmes.
