The year 2009 will always be
remembered by 16 female soccer
players who sport medallions to
remind them of the 13 games that
were played to a glorious victory.
The Blyth U-16 girls played nine
games during the regular soccer
season, scoring 79 goals with only
15 goals against them.
On July 20 the U-16 girls played
in their year-end tournament in
Goderich. They played an
impressive game against St.
Columban. But St. Columban could
not defend themselves against
Blyth’s very strong forward line.
Blyth won this game 5-0.
Forwards were Kayla Black,
Marijke Oudshoorn, Ali Snell,
Alanna Uyl and Sheree Uyl.
July 21, Blyth trampled Lucknow
winning by a score of 8-0. The half
backs contributed by keeping the
ball out of Blyth’s end. Half backs
were Courtney Bos, Brooke
Bouman, Brooke Snell, Emily Uyl
and Laura VanSchiek.
On July 22, Blyth came up against
Wingham. But Wingham was no
match for Blyth’s full backs. Blyth
won this game with another shutout
of 4-0. Full backs were Jillian
Kikkert, Alex Raynard, Claire
Reinink, Jeanette Schraam and
Leonie VanderWetering.
With three wins and a total of nine
points, Blyth earned the right to play
in the championship game. July 23
the girls faced a very determined
Clinton squad. Blyth outplayed and
outsmarted Clinton, winning this
game 3-1 to capture the trophy.
Between the posts, Blyth’s
outstanding goalie was Natalie
White. For her efforts in this
tournament, White received three
shutout games and had only one
goal scored against her.
Coach Peter Uyl and assistant
coach Jory Uyl thank the girls and
their parents for their support and
dedication to the sport of soccer.
“This team would not be the team to
beat if each member did not
contribute 100 per cent of their
efforts to make this the successful
year that it was,” they said. “We
played as a team and we won as a
team. They are true champions.”
The Brussels Bantams after
finishing their season in seventh
place played in a B consolation
tournament in Londesborough. The
top four teams had a home-and-home
series. There were nine teams in the
Tri-County Bantam league.
Brussels started the tournament
facing top-seeded Benmiller. Both
teams scored a run in the first and
remained tied until the sixth.
Benmiller added one, then another in
the top of the seventh.
Brussels dug in for their last at bat.
Ty Sebastian’s solo homerun closed
the gap to one. Shea McLean singled
then advanced on a single by Morgan
Dietner. McLean was able to steal his
way home for the tie.
T. Sebastian, on the mound for
Brussels, sat 13 Benmiller batters on
strikeouts.
Brussels faced Londesborough and
were down by two at the end of the
first inning. The Brussels offence
was lackluster until the fourth when
they scored six runs on homerun by
T. Sebastian and singles from Rachel
Cousins, Dietner and Marissa Pipe.
T. Sebastian added another 14
strikeouts for the 10-3 win.
Next they played Ripley. All of the
Brussels squad had their bats on fire
for this game. T. Sebastian went
three for three at the plate and
McLean had two homeruns.
PeeWees Adam Cousins, Brody
TenPas and Brock McLean, on a
break from their year-end
tournament came and gave the
Brussels Bantams some help in the
scorching heat.
The final score was Brussels 16,
Ripley 0. Brussels qualified for the
final game for the B championship,
and came up against Benmiller.
Brussels took a lead in the third
scoring two runs on doubles by T.
Sebastian and Ryan Sholdice.
Benmiller answered with a single.
Benmiller’s offence pounded the
Brussels squad in the fourth scoring
five runs on three singles and two
doubles.
With Brussels down by three they
needed some hits. Singles by Pipe,
Lane Sebastian and Ty Sebastian
loaded the bases. McLean and
Sholdice got RBIs. With two out
Dietner and Cousins waited the walk
to load the bases again and a single
by Marlene Dale tied the game.
Brussels held the Benmiller squad
to no runs which led to a tie-breaking
inning. With Cody Higgins placed on
second, Lane Sebastian doubled
which was followed by a triple from
Ty Sebastian who eventually stole
home.
Up by three the Brussels Bantams
held it together for a three-up, three-
down inning winning the Bantam B
championship 9-6.
The Brussels Bantams are:
coaches, Sandra Josling and Lisa
Glanville and players Ty and Lane
Sebastian, Rachel Cousins, Marissa
Pipe, Marlene Dale, Morgan Dietner,
Shea McLean, Ryan Sholdice and
Cody Higgins.

On July 27 the Blyth Barons
played the Goderich Gators in
Goderich.
In the Barons’ first, Darcey Cook
led off with a walk and scored on a
Ryan Clancy triple. Mike McDonald
brought Clancy home with a
sacrifice.
In the bottom half, a homerun by
the Gator’s catcher narrowed the
score to 2-1.
In the Barons’ next at bat, Mike
Bromley led off with a single then
moved to third on bunts by Jeff
Elliott and Scott Bromley. M.
Bromley eventually crossed the
plate.
The lead increased in the top of the
third. Pat Cronin walked. He and
Shawn Bromley were brought across
the plate on a Mike Bromley double.
The Gators scored four runs on
two hits and two Baron errors in the
bottom of the inning to tie the game
5-5.
Clancy and McDonald walked in
the next inning and moved up a base
on a Chris Stewart sacrifice. Shawn
Bromley tripled to bring two runs
home and retake the lead.
Pitcher Scott Bromley then retired
the side with three ground balls to
secure the lead. Cook came on the
mound in the bottom of the fifth and
gave up the lone hit, but retired three
on ground ball outs.
In the seventh, Jeff Elliott got to
first on a Gator error and was
brought home when a Cook single
was followed by an error. Cook
scored on a Ryan Clancy ground out.
The Barons hung on to the 9-5
lead for a victory.

Hooray! Hooray! Summer arrived
last weekend at the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club.
Monday the club hosted a group of
firefighters from Tiverton who
played 18 holes of golf and enjoyed
lunch on the patio with a few needed
refreshments. With the hot
temperatures it must have felt at
times the boys were fighting fires.
The Tuesday night ladies held a
Mexican night this past week.
Seventeen senoritas played golf with
their five irons only (what a light golf
bag). Lowest score was Linda
Walker. Most honest was Sue
(Debbie’s friend), most honest putter
was Ann Ross and Debbie Currie
won the draw.
The girls had lots of laughs and
enjoyed an excellent meal, fajitas,
taco salad, Mexican dessert and even
threw back a few margueritas. Great
fun was had by all!
There were 35 golfers out for the
Wednesday morning men’s seniors
as the young and old joined together
for a ‘happy face’ scramble and the
scoring was certainly good.
Capturing both the low gross and low
net with a par 35 and low net of 29
was a foursome made up of Gar
Lawrence, his grandson Cameron
Lawrence, Harry George and his
nephew Craig Martin.
Second low net went to the
Pewtress boys, Jeff and Brad paired
with seniors Bob Johnston and
Wayne Gordon. In third spot Brent
Jarvis was teamed with seniors Don
Rae and Doug Barfoot.
The juniors put a lot of pressure on
the seniors and the event was such a
success for both young and old that
plans are to make this an annual
event.
The Thursday night men again
proved they are die-hard golfers.
After getting belted with two inches
of rain Buff’s group still had 30
golfers out. The winners were:
closest to the pin, Murray Foxton;
longest putt, Foxton and John
Matekovik; hidden score, Dave
Gamble and Joe O’Rourke; low
gross, 37 Jay Marston, Trevor Hopf
and Foxton. Great round Murray.
Friday morning Trevor Hopf ran
the final junior clinic for the summer.
The girls and boys worked on basic
skills of driving, chipping and
putting before heading out to play on
the course.
Trevor and Terry Anger, who ran
the clinic the previous two weeks,
both made comments on the
potential the group of kids have.
Thanks to the children for
participating and special thanks to
Terry and Trevor.

Malick Memorial Tournament is

The Wingham Golf and Curling
club wish best of luck to the

who are heading to New Brunswick
this weekend to compete in the
