Another August weekend gone,
hopefully well spent in your opinion
anyway.
For us it was gathering with
Galbraith and Watson cousins at
Keith and Carol’s place by
Whitechurch. Sisters Alma and Gene
Galbraith married the Watson
brothers Carson and Reg in the 1930s
and five of their seven children, with
some of their children, had a good
time last Saturday. Camping,
chatting, eating, playing, more eating
and of course a bonfire made for a
good reunion. Alma and Gene just
watched and smiled.
A few weeks ago the congregation
of Brussels United Church had a nice
visit with Mac Irvine from Guelph.
Mac was remembering some good
memories from Brussels. He was
married to Jane the daughter of Hazel
and Cecil McFadden and offered
some beautiful roses in their memory.
Cecil was the barber here for years
and Hazel was a community worker,
both well loved. Several folks
remembered a few good stories about
them, that Mac was pleased to hear,
as well recalling his Nash convertible.
Just recently there have been a
couple of observations that made me
chuckle out loud. The first one was in
Quebec, driving along through the
trees and hills and passing a house
that had a large green dinosaur with a
sweet green offspring serving as the
outdoor chimney. A pretty neat way
to break up a long drive and one I’d
really enjoy seeing blowing smoke.
The second smile came with music
first. Bagpipe music on a speaker
coming from a nice shiny motorcycle
with the lone rider wearing a kilt and
bright white knee socks, with his
parade hat strapped in the passenger
spot. Now that was good pipe music.
It’s check time for the students in
our midst – supplies will be needed
very soon – pencils, binders, runners,
backpacks …
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A good crowd of 12 tables of
players were on hand for the
Brussels Legion’s Saturday euchre.
The top prize of the day went to
pair Lorna and Ethel with 83 points.
In second were Bernie and Betty
with 80 points and third prize went
to Vera Lindner and Vera Ahrens
with 72 points. Lacking in luck for
the low prize of the day were Ray
and Hank with only 39 points.
Lone-hand prizes went to Joann
MacDonald for the ladies and Ivan
Bennewies for the men.
Euchre is every two weeks.
The Sunday night dance had the
biggest crowd of the year with over
115 folks attending. Playing was
John Heaman and as usual, his
group did a wonderful job of
playing.
The next dance will not be until
Sept. 20 due to the holiday weekend.
The elimination draw is drawing
closer. Early bird draw is on Sept. 4.
Get in on the three early bird draws
by getting your ticket from the
Branch, Murray’s Barber Shop or
Branch members.
September also begins the
membership drive for the Branch.
Members can renew their dues at an
early-bird price and get their names
in for the membership draws held at
the end of each month. New
members can also get in on the
early-bird price and can pick up
application forms at the Branch and
at the Brussels Fall Fair table.
Membership is open to all
Canadian citizens and no veteran
affiliation is needed to join.
We encourage folks to come out
and inquire about the Legion
anytime during regular business
hours or contact any Legion member
or membership chairman Greg
Wilson or president John Lowe.

scrambling to get the application
together by the Aug. 18 deadline,
even if the application is completed
and eventually approved for the
requested funds, the final decision
will rest with Huron East council.
The council meeting was Aug. 25
and council members were
presented with an extensive report,
prepared by Knight, outlining the
details of the potential situation,
should the funding be received for
the library.
Knight says that when the final
decision on the library was made, no
significant funding was available for
either the option to build a new
library or to update the existing
library. This new funding could
change the terms of the decision,
giving the municipality more
options. The key to having this
potential option was to have an
application filed by Aug. 18 he said.
Hoy said even if the funding
would be approved, that wouldn’t
necessarily mean that the concept of
a new library would be abandoned.
“The fundraising committee is still
meeting, but we would be foolish
not to consider this,” Hoy said.

What an amazing year I’ve had! First of all I’d like to
congratulate Jolanda on being our new Ambassador, good
luck in the year ahead! What a great community Brussels
is to belong to! The CNE this past weekend was a huge
experience I will never forget. I would like to thank
everyone for their support that I have received this past
year, it makes it even harder to leave Brussels as I go off
to University this fall. A special thanks to Nicole Noble
for all her hard work and for making everything so much
fun. And also thank you to our Agricultural Society and to
our fair board for everything they do for our Ambassador.
I’m proud to call Brussels my home!
