Any meetings between Morris- Turnberry and North Huron councillors should be formal meetings, a motion passed at Morris- Turnberry councillors at their Aug. 11 meeting stated. Councillors rejected an idea proposed by councillor Mark Beaven when he appeared on his own behalf at North Huron council Aug. 4. Beaven had suggested that an informal committee of two councillors from each municipality meet to keep communications open. The councillors would then bring issues back to their own councils for resolution. “I don’t agree. It’s not the way to do it,” said mayor Dorothy Kelly as she introduced a motion to offer formal, full-council joint meetings with North Huron at “any time, on any subject”. Such meetings should be advertised just as regular council meetings are, she said. “I think municipal business should be at the table,” agreed councillor Bill Thompson, rejecting the idea of informal meetings. Councillor Paul Gowing defended the idea of Beaven, who was absent from the meeting, noting the proposal would not see the informal committee make any decisions. The proposal is an attempt to speed up co-operation between the two councils, he said. But he was alone in his opinion. “One council should meet the other council,” said councillor Lynn Hoy. The Brussels Squirt A team took gold in the year-end tournament in Seaforth on Saturday, Aug. 8. It had been a great season for this team ending in first for the year with a 12-1-1- record. Friday night Brussels played Zurich for the first game of the tournament and won 18-1, then on Saturday morning they played Seaforth II in a tight contest which they won 5-1. The championship game was played in the afternoon. Even in the pouring rain, it was a very tightly fought battle against Benmiller ending in a 2-1 victory. The score was 1-0 for a long time then Brussels gained another run late in the game only to have Benmiller get one back early the next inning. Brussels was able to hold off an attack in the final inning leaving runners on first and third for the victory. Brussels Squirt A members are: Rachel Hastings, Austin Johnston, Dawson Peachey, Faith Sebastian, Rachel Miners, Jasmin Roth, Gregory Ward, David Hastings, Donald Hastings, Mitchell Kellington, Katelyn MacLeod, Colton Hastings, Natalie Fear and Hayden Ten Pas. Brussels has received its new television at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, and the Seaforth and Vanastra Centres will have theirs shortly. This fall, each centre will be outfitted with one of the 42-inch screens, which will play a slide show of scenes captured throughout the municipality. The timing, says Huron East economic development officer Jan Hawley, is perfect, with the televisions being installed just before hundreds of children begin passing through all three centres’ doors as hockey hits the ice again for the winter. The plan, Hawley says, is to entice people to stay in the community longer after the action on the ice has concluded. The televisions will be mounted in the lobbies of the centres, directly above a large map of the municipality, listing area businesses and what they offer. Hopefully, says Hawley, the scenes on the screen will encourage visitors to match what they’ve just seen on the screen to its location on the map and perhaps even look into a visit before heading home. Hawley is also in the process of having the second printing of the new Seaforth brochure produced, while she is currently finishing up Brussels and Vanastra brochures. The total cost of the project is just under $3,000, with each television costing $750, $150 each to be mounted and $50 each for a dvd player.
