They started off against Goderich. This was a good game with Brussels scoring early. Wyatt Ducharme got the first goal assisted by Stephanie Hummel. Then Lexi Smith put in a nice one from the corner and Dalen Martin picked up two with Laura Souch and Cody Rathwell assisting. Delayna Smith scored a high one, assisted by Hudson Smith and Ducharme finished the scoring with his second goal. That got the team pumped for the second game against Clinton. Missing some players, the team held on and ended the game tied at 1-1. Martin scored with Lexi Smith assisting. There was no time for overtime so they went right into a shootout. Clinton put in two on Eric Van Ness and Lexi Smith was the only one to score for Brussels. Friday night they were up against the first-place team Seaforth. With players still away they went out and tried hard. Van Ness played strong in net but Brussels was not able to pull off a win. Brussels moved into the semi- finals. Saturday morning the team was keen to play Wingham. It was a hard game and the locals fought to the end which finished in a tie. Martin and Ducharme scored. The mighty had another shootout and the two Smith girls put Brussels on the board. Van Ness made some beautiful saves to keep Brussels in the lead and advanced then to the finals against Clinton. With the players getting tired and wet and the goalie having to leave, Brussels didn’t come out on top, but they were very happy with second overall. Edged out The Brussels Bantam team was in Londesborough last weekend for some tournament play, taking on Colborne in one of Saturday’s first games. The Brussels runner was edged out at second base here to end the inning. Playing with their celebrity golfer, Joe McCrea, a former professional lacrosse player from Waterloo, the team carded a minus 16 over the 18- hole course to win by three strokes. Braving the damp conditions, 132 golfers again made the tournament a success with profits going towards the Western Ontario Athletic Association Programs. In there Milverton’s base runner made it to second, but the Blyth Bantam boys team rallied in the sixth, scoring eight to cruise to an impressive 12-2 victory. The game was a must- win for Blyth, which now travels to Milverton tonight (Aug. 20) to play again in hopes of bringing the series back to Blyth on Aug. 23. (Shawn Loughlin photo) The weather finally turned hot but with the heat came the rain at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. The good news the groundskeepers needed the wet days to get the course back in great shape. Many members and visitors have made comments on the good playing condition our fairways and greens are in. The Tuesday ladies had a beautiful golf day after the threat of rain in the morning. Twenty of the girls came out and enjoyed the golf and many ate and socialized on the patio. The golf staff have put weights in the umbrella stands and the umbrellas sure add to the scenic view from the patio. The Wednesday morning senior men had 23 golfers this past week. The winners were: first, Ken Saxton; second, Doug Neil and third, Ed Daer. Doug and Ed tied for low gross with 37. Lloyd Lamont finished his day with a big birdie on number nine.
