The Grey Wild Walkers 4-H Club
held its first meeting of the Walk on
the Wild Side on July 29 at the
Maitland Valley conservation area in
Brussels. Fourteen members were
present.
The elections were held with the
results being: president, Chelsey
Terpstra; vice-president, Jonathan
Blake; treasurer, Lexi Smith. The
secretary and press reporter will be
floating positions. Members were
divided into two groups for a
scavenger hunt. They were given
maps and six clues leading to the old
hospital, the dentist office, the five-
cent store, The Citizen office, the
Legion and the dam. It was very
challenging but both groups
succeeded.
The leaders discussed the different
clouds and predicting the weatherbased on that. The meeting closed with the 4-Hpledge.The second meeting was called toorder on Aug. 7 at the BayfieldSawmill Trail.
Before hiking members discussed
what poison ivy looked like and
where the trail went. They also
discussed what the people at the
back and front did so no one would
get lost. They are called the lead and
the sweep.
They went down Lois Heartbreak
Hill and found some jewel plant (a
natural antiseptic), wild ginger,
oregano and a sycamore tree.
The leaders told stories behind the
names of the bridges and benches
and Lois heartbreak hill. A long time
ago a man named Lois had a
sweetheart he wanted to marry. In
order to marry her he had to move
his house up the hill because of the
flooding at the bottom. So he took it
up brick by brick. By the time he
was done his sweetheart didn’t want
to marry him anymore, so he took it
down brick by brick.

The third meeting of the Grey
Township Wild Walkers was held in
London at the University of Western
Ontario’s Hume Cronyn
Observatory. Eleven members and
many parents met there at 8:30 p.m.
to watch a power point presentation
about the solar system. They learned
that 2009 is the International Year of
Astronomy, because it was 400 years
ago that Galileo first used a
telescope to look into space.
Every member was given a card
with a special PIN on it and with that
they could register their names.
These will be put onto a CD and thatCD will go into space on the nextCanadian Telescope.Next they went up to see the reallybig telescope that was first used inthe 1940s. Even though thetelescope is at the top of the building
under a dome, the base of it goes all
the way down through the building
and into the ground to prevent it
from shaking. They got a chance to
look through it, but unfortunately it
was a cloudy night.
They then used a small telescopeoutside and looked into a buildingfar away and we could see the smallred Exit sign. The sign was upsidedown, and members learned that alltelescopes show their images upsidedown.
The observatory is open to the
public every Saturday night in the
summer and many members said
they were planning to return on a
clear night so they could actually see
some stars and constellations.

Martins host Cranbrook euchre
North Huron council will be
taking a second look at the location
they chose late last month for a
laundry/bathroom facility at the
Blyth Campground.
After reviewing seven sites, and
coming up with a compromise with
the utilities department for the
space, one councillor said at the
Aug. 4 meeting that there might not
be enough room at the chosen
space.
“I just don’t see how we can build
it where we want to,” said councillor
Alma Conn.
Council agreed to have another
look at the site, but a decision has to
be made as the tenders for the
construction have to start.
Director of recreation and
facilities Pat Newson said the
project will start as soon as the
Threshers Association clears out of
the campground after their reunion
in September.
Council rethinks location
