HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-08-13, Page 12A couple of European students
recently took part in the Lions Club
Youth Exchange and shared their
time between Jack and Nancy
Cameron and Bill and Susanne
Robinson from July 4 - July 31.
Michelle Crawford of Banbridge,
Northern Ireland and Sara
Rantamaki of Kurikka, Finland took
the trek across the Atlantic Ocean to
experience the expanse of Canada,
to be more specific, the rural
wonderland of southwestern
Ontario.
The two girls spent their time
between the Robinson house on St.
Augustine Line and the Cameron’s
cottage at Huron Sands.
Being from Northern Ireland,
Crawford was amazed at the size of
Canada because it took a long time
to drive to most places. She was
surprised it took over two hours to
get to Toronto, something she’s not
used to living in the slightly smaller
country of Northern Ireland.
The experience of coming to
Canada was a positive one for
Crawford, it being her first
exchange.
“It’s a great opportunity to travel
and to meet people from all over the
world,” said Crawford. “I chose
Canada because it’s so big and
different. I wanted a totally new
experience from home.”
Crawford said she would like to
do more traveling and her next
excursion would be to Germany
because the 17-year-old has been
taking German in school. She’d like
to get a first hand experience of the
language.
Rantamaki is a little farther away
in the city of Kurikka, Finland and
chose Canada because she heard
most of the people here are very
nice. She also wanted to go to a
bigger country and chose Canada forobvious reasons. One of the things she was not usedto was southwestern Canada’shumid summers. With an averagesummer temperature of around 18
degrees celsius for Rantamaki, it
was something to get used to for her.
She did mention that she had a
very enjoyable time with her two
exchange families and will leave
with good memories. “I wanted to
see different parts of the world, meet
new people and I just like to travel in
general,” said Rantamaki.
One of Rantamaki best
experiences of her trip to Canada
was the Charlie Shaw International
Riverstone Retreat in Durham,
where she was able to talk to and
enjoy a few days with other
exchange students from around the
world.
The Robinsons and Camerons
were impressed with how well
behaved the girls were the entire
time they were at their homes and
enjoyed the whole experience. They
have been doing exchanges for years
and can’t wait until the next set of
exchange students come their way.
“You get to learn a lot about other
countries,” said Bill Robinson.
“Unless you travel you wouldn’t be
able to learn the things we have over
the years having the students here.”
