By Zach Drost The South Huron 4-H Sheep Club held its fourth meeting on Wednesday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. Once all members had arrived at Falconers’farm, outside of Vanastra, the meeting was opened with the 4- H pledge. The reading of the minutes followed, read by the secretary, Amber Brodie. The members walked to the barn where senior member Fraser Falconer gave a demonstration showing the proper techniques of leading a lamb. When handling a lamb you should place your hand under the lamb’s jaw and keep is head raised. When standing a sheep should have its legs squarely placed under its body. Also, never put your arm over top of the lamb as that blocks the judge’s view. Always set up the lamb and handle it so that the judge has full view of the animal. The leaders gave tips on how to prepare a lamb for show (for example how to properly cut or trim its hooves and to cut off its supply of water the night before a show). Members judged classes of eggs and a survival kit in order to prepare for the upcoming judging competition. Each member was asked to provide reasons for ranking each class. The Huron County judging competition will be held in Seaforth at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, Aug. 11. After all judging had been completed the meeting was ended with the 4-H motto and a snack. The next meeting will be at the Bayfield Fair on Saturday, Aug. 15 beginning at 9 a.m. In the morning the lambs will be sheared and members will be showing their 4-H project lambs after lunch. 4-H Sheep Club members see leading demonstration TUESDAYS 9:00 a.m. Fed Cattle, Bulls & Cows THURSDAYS 8:00 a.m.Drop Calves 10:00 a.m.Veal 11:30 a.m.Pigs, Lambs, Goats & Sheep FRIDAYS 10:00 a.m. Stockers Call us 519-887-6461 Visit our webpage at: www.brusselslivestock.ca email us at: info@brusselslivestock.ca BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK Division of Gamble & Rogers Ltd.
