It has been a great two weeks in the
communities of Brussels and Walton.
The most important in this farming
area is that the wheat and straw
harvest is well underway. It’s a busy
time for the farmers and the weather
plays an all important part.
A mini storm went through Walton
on Sunday evening causing a lot of
damage. Cathy McClure, who lives
on Hullett-McKillop Road reports
that the wind came up in a big hurry
and the next thing they new, a tree
had come down and damaged the
garage and wiped out the satellite
dish. Moving over a line to Canada
Company Road, Paul Ryan reports
that Cheryl thought they should be
heading for the basement as it got
very dark and the rain, lightning and
wind were fierce.
He says that Brenda Dalton called
to see if they were alright, as they
were sitting on their porch and could
see the blackness of the storm over
the Ryan property, yet they had
nothing at the Dalton home.
The storm then moved into Walton
and the high elevator atop the silos at
P&H buckled. The leg and the steps
came down and hit the top of the silo
and are resting in that position.
Heading up the Walton Road, trees
were brought down at Salvidars,
Baans and Grobbinks. The Lees are
getting ready for Transcan motocross
and the toilets were blown over in the
field. The storm didn’t last long but it
created a lot of mess for many.
Summer is always the most popular
time for vacationing, but again the
weather hasn’t been the best for that.
Barry and Karen Hoegy, Ron and
Dorothy Williamson and Ron and
Gloria Riley spent two weeks
camping in Timmins. It was an 11-
hour drive and they arrived to wet and
cool weather with a touch of rain
everyday while away.
The mosquitoes had a healthy
appetite to make things even more
enjoyable.
The group went fishing quite a few
times and caught both pike and
pickerel. They had a good time in
spite of the weather as good friends
will always do.
Returning from a weeks getaway
and a little better weather are Judy
Emmrich, Ruth Uyl, Hannah, Emily,
Tiffany and Dawn. They were in the
Wiarton area along with around 60
other horse riding enthusiasts. They
were mostly members of the Chesley
Horse Club and this was their yearly
trail ride and camp week.
They rode everyday and enjoyed
the beautiful scenery of the area.
The women were joined on the
weekend by John Uyl for the last
couple of days of riding.
Judy reports that it was wonderful,
peaceful and restful and they all had a
marvelous time away.
Our family had a very busy
weekend to start August. Neil
McDonald was home for the
weekend from Vancouver. The menmade plans to go to Hamilton to seethe Tiger Cats play the B.C. Lionsfootball game. The party of two thengrew to a party of four, then six andthen nine. Heading off to attend thegame were Neil, Rick, ScottMcDonald, Jason Konarski, AdamJarozs and nephew Michael Warwick, who had flown in from Calgary on
Friday morning. Joining the
McDonald clan was Steve Knight
along with brother-in-law Weldon
Black and son Andrew.
The guys really enjoyed the game
especially since the Tiger Cats won.
It was the first time the Blacks had
seen a professional football game.
Weldon, Joanne, Andrew and
Allison Black have been here two
weeks enjoying holidays with Jack
and Donna Knight and the occasion
of Brad and Christine Knight’s
wedding. They went to Canada’s
Wonderland for a day and
experienced the wonderful world of
traffic jams. They spent two hours
crawling just a few miles on the way
there, then spent about 45 minutes in
a jam trying to get home. Not a great
start to a fun day nor a great finish,
but they enjoyed Wonderland.
They have returned home to St.
John, New Brunswick and Jack and
Donna have settled back into their
quieter routine.
Leona McDonald has had visitors
from the west in the past couple of
weeks. Neil, stayed with his mom,
but had side trips to Hamilton for
football, Bayfield to visit sister Karen
and her family, visiting another friend
in Bayfield, a visit with friend Gwen
Devereaux in Seaforth and with
Christine Turnbull also. He attended
church on Sunday and a family
brunch following. He was busy but
managed to catch up with many.
The second western visitors here to
visit with the McDonalds were Mike,
Chrissy, Sydney and Brycen Warwick
from Calgary. They are here for a two
week vacation with mother Karen
McDonald Calhoun in Bayfield.
The first order of business was to
have their youngest child Brycen
baptized at Duff’s United Church
Walton.
Godparents for Brycen in
attendance were Kelly McDonald
and Neil McDonald.
Great-grandmother, Leona
McDonald, treated the family to
brunch at J.R’s following the
baptism. The kids then returned to
Bayfield for the day.
Mike and family have been back to
the farm since then and have watched
and had rides in the combine while
the men are taking off the wheat.
They have enjoyed time at the beach
and the kids love playing in the water.
The third event of the McDonald
weekend was an engagement party
held at our home for our son Scott
and fiancée Alicia. The wedding
party and their partners along with
members of Alicia’s immediate
family, gathered to meet and have
some fun. Our daughters, LeeAnnand Kelly, organized an AmazingRace for them to take part in. Fiveteams of four plus a couple venturedoff to complete the four segments ofthe race in two hours. There was thetrivia section of facts of the engagedcouple, there was the photoscavenger section, the Detour Taskssection and the Hot Spot section.
They all had a great time and it was
hilarious to see what and how some
teams did. Neighbours lending a
hand with the detour tasks included
Jim and Linda McDonald and Chris
and Judy Lee. After their return and
the judging, they relaxed for a while.
Barbecued pork chops and chicken
were served for supper.
Congratulations to Graeme and
Marg Work on celebrating their 60th
wedding anniversary this past week.
They surprised the morning coffee
group with cake last Thursday
morning. I believe a second reason
for celebration was Marg was also
celebrating her birthday. Congrats to
the couple on both occasions.
Congratulations to Greg Wilson
and Sharon Montgomery who
married on Saturday. About 80 family
and friends attended the ceremony in
the tent on the lawn of their home. It
was a rather damp affair but as the old
saying goes, a little rain on the
wedding day is good luck.
Congratulations are also extended
to Allan and Claudia Cardiff who
married a couple of weeks ago. They
were married at their farm with
family and friends enjoying the
afternoon ceremony and later a
delicious dinner and reception.
They say that things happen in
threes and Graeme Craig has the
story to prove it this week. The first
near disaster at the beginning of the
day was averted when an employee
of the Walton Inn sensed something
wrong with the freezer. A new freezer
was moved in immediately and the
old one taken away within the hour.
Graeme and Michael then made a
trip to Port Elgin. After finishing the
errand they went for a treat of icecream. Returning to the vehicle,Graeme found the remote for openingthe door had broken off the ring andwas lying on the floor of the lockedvehicle. You would think thatinserting the key into the lock wouldopen the door, but in some vehiclesthat is not the case. The cell phonewas locked in the vehicle.
A helpful clerk let Graeme call for
Helen and she arrived and finally the
ordeal was over.
Later heading off to bed, Graeme
glanced out the window at the pool
and saw a dead skunk floating in the
water. Another job to make a long
day even longer.
Pat Button is now cooking at the
Walton Inn. We welcome her and
wish Betty Riley all the best in her
new job at The Grandview in Blyth.
Two couples from Brussels had an
enjoyable day away last weekend.
Brian and Dianne Huether and Dave
and Karen Hastings drove to
Brampton to meet with Dave and
Angela Huether. The group then
traveled to the Toronto Centre of the
Arts to enjoy The Jersey Boys. The
whole group agreed it was a
wonderful performance with music
they could really relate to.
Dave Huether gave them a tour
around the different cultural areas of
Toronto.
The group made their way back to
Brampton where they enjoyed dinner
together. Dave also gave them a tour
of the Brampton area.
Both of Dave and Angela’s boys,
Kevin and Jeff, work in Toronto. The
couples really enjoyed the hospitality
of the Huethers and their day away.
It came as a complete surprise to
Paul Ryan to return from a day’s
outing on the motorcycle with friends
to find ten times more friends
gathered to celebrate his 50th
birthday. Cheryl and the boys, Curtis
and Matt, managed to arrange
surprise party for Paul, with him not
any the wiser.
Many of the guests arrived by bike,
cars, trucks, motorhomes and broughttents to stay and party. They had agreat day and a great meal later on. Congrats to Paul on reaching themilestone of 50.Pat and George Langlois just keepon celebrating their 50+1 weddinganniversary. This past weekend theywent to Windsor and the new CaesarCasino. It was an anniversary present
from Pat’s sisters, Betty and Mary.
They also went with them and had a
great time.
Pat and George were on the 25th
floor and in a beautiful suite. They
also met up with Don Carter and his
wife Josie, who live in Windsor. Don
toured them around Windsor showing
them the sites, such as the big Italian
restaurants and clubs.
They also took Pat and George to
the Casino show, Larry The Cable
Guy. Pat reports that it was hilarious
and they really enjoyed it. The group
could see the waterfront from the
hotel and could hear the music from
the Gay Pride Parade. They saw a few
participants and their outfits.
Pat reports that they did not come
home richer, but they didn’t come
home poorer either. They had a
wonderful weekend with their family
and friends.
Celebrating birthdays in the last
couple of weeks were Marg Bennett,
